Those are valid points.

However, I’m not drawing a direct comparison in terms of fatalities or rates of infection which those points may influence.
Im thinking about the approach adopted by the two governments.

The UK, in my humble opinion, have been complacent, inept and woefully inadequate.
Putting thousands of lives at risk.

Just my opinion though.

You're still making comparisons, comparisons in my view are pointless given how different each country is.

To prove my point, if you look at the approach adopted by both, the UK went into lockdown before New Zealand when you factor number of confirmed cases per population.

Just checked this and;

  • The population density in New Zealand is 18 per Km2 (47 people per mi2).
  • The population density in the United Kingdom is 281 per Km2 (727 people per mi2).

A fairer comparison might be with here in Ireland. We haven't done terribly, but NZ went hard and early and have reaped the benefits. Regardless of the degrees of difficulty, they have done very very well with what they had

I do not think we should determine our hospitals as "coping" at the minute. Not to take anything away from the admirable work they do under immense pressure. The ICU places may not be overran (yet) but what have we lost, 19 NHS staff to this horrid disease? They need help and let us not paint it any other way.

I can't know for sure, but I feel this is a misnomer when discussing the virus, as I think the average BMI in this country is 27.5.

So surely all that's happening is the hospital intake for coronavirus is simply representing approximately the national average rather than it being a reliable morbidity indicator for the virus?
Just because the majority of people are overweight does not make it right to be overweight
Its a proven fact that those with a BMI over 25 will suffer more from covid 19 than those of a healthy weight

Sure about that?

If the statistical average of those admitted to hospital with COVID-19 is the same as the statistical average of the BMI of the general population, then how is it a definitive risk factor?

Compare it to age, for example, and you can see a clear correlation between advanced age and mortality with this - I don't see the same with BMI.

Overweight people have decreased lung function in general and thats what causes the problems with covid 19

Yet"healthy" people get seriously ill and die of it too.

I'm asking where is the evidence that 25+ BMI is a definitive factor in the mortality rate of this, given the admission rate to ICU is simply in line with the population average.

They can be compared, just with noting that there is a difference in population. Most countries will have demographic differences, however the ones that seem to be coming out best, took quick and decisive action.

Don't really agree tbh. Population is bound to have a big impact. Probably the biggest individual factor.

Think it's too early to judge as well.

I'll explain what I mean about BMI in more details.

Here's the stats about BMI for COVID-19.

BMI

Under 18.5
- 1 (0.6%)
18.5-25 - 49 (27.7%)
25-30 - 56 (31.6%)
30-40 - 58 (32.8%)
40+ - 13 (7.3%)

So around 2/3 of all patients are 25+ BMI.

But the problem with that is that 2/3 of the overall population of the UK is 25+ BMI.

So in essence all those stats show is that BMI is on the surface a non-factor in its' own right because the hospital admissions for it is reflecting broader society.

Take age as a comparison instead. The average UK age is approximately 40. The average age of admission for COVID-19 to ICU is 64. So age is clearly a very determinate factor in the mortality of this thing. BMI doesn't have the same evidence.
