Beckford's scoring record

A more interesting stat would be his goal to chance ratio - he has missed a lot of chances including a couple of sitters.

I am pleased that he is improving - christ after loaning out Yak and Vaughan we need him to - but he is still far from the finished article. If he gets to 12 goals it will be a successful first season for him that hopefully he can build on.

He has, but he -- like most strikers -- relies on confidence. Once the goals start coming then he can go on a run.

Saha couldn't do anything right for 11 months, and then all of a sudden he scores 8 in about 5 games.

I think he was just bored with league one. Let's be honest, he really is too good for the third tier. And he's starting to prove that he's good enough for the prem.

You're right though. As many of us (myself included) have said, he needs a strike partner. He is that kind of player. Him and Saha are a lethal combo -- producing 5 goals between them in their last 90 minutes playing together (last 15 mins of Blackpool game; Saha x2, Beckford x1 and then Beckford x2 for the 70 odd minutes they played together yesterday) -- they give each other space and both offer something different, whilst complementing each other.

He makes Saha a more effective player too. One of the problems with Saha in the 4-5-1 was that he was drifting too far back and hanging outiside the box and concequently we had no one in the box more often than not. In the 4-4-2 Saha is free to roam more and create at the attacking end. He's also free to come back and help the defense (something that he's damn good at he got the ball out of our own end quite a bit against sunderland yesterday) and with Beckford up front we still have the threat of a counter when Saha bails us out defensively.

Lets not get carried away Neiler, hes a long way away from being Gary Lineker. Hes showing promise in the 2nd half of the season but lets not get carried away with is 6 goals eh..

It's more the way he plays mate, centrally, on the shoulder of defenders, hunting space in the box. He's a proper goalscorer poacher, his movement, ability to find space, pace outside the box and on the shoulder of defenders is something I havnt seen since linekar very similar in terms of style! Admittedly he will never be as good- but the lad is a natural goalscorer - he will always score goals! I mean that in the sense of comparison with the likes of yak, Beattie who made a contribution in terms of hold up play, and Johnson who worked the flanks! It's a long time since we've had a specialist box poacher!

Ive always been a fan to be honest, I think he's capable of15 - 20 goals a season, if he plays every game.

It will be interesting to see, what will happen next week if super tim cahi is fit, surely he deserves to hold his place next week, Saha is also a brilliant foil for him!

Superb post Neiler- he needs the fans on his side which I think most are tbf right now. Louis just seems to give that extra 10 percent when he's got his buddy next to him.

That brace has taken him to fifth place in the entire league in terms of goals per minute.

5th, in one of the two best leagues in the world, after jumping from the third division.

He should be one of the first names on the teamsheet now. Come on Jermaine, lid! (y)

is this 'table' a bit like that in the bookies where they take bets without the top4 or without the fav. cos Jo's 6 hat-tricks this season must have him leading in the real world.

i'm not worried about him missing good chances at all. a chance is a chance no matter what league you're playing in, and we know he can finish them in the lower leagues. that means he's more than capable of putting the ball in the net when he has the chance, its just a matter of confidence, which is thankfully coming along for him.

still, i don't think those defending him should be so quick to gloat. wait till you have more to back up your case than a dodgy goals per minute stat, as that tells us practically nothing. think about it, his first season, vaughan would have been top of that table, except for the players that have been playing consistently (berbatov, tevez), your place on the table is more a reflection of the strength of opposition you're playing against. chicharito is so high cos he gets full games against weak teams.

i like becks and i think he'll come good, but it certainly remains to be seen.

A bit of in house context, appearances and goals of our other sorta fringe strikers.

Victor Anichebe - 92(12)
James Vaughan - 58(9)

Jermaine Beckford - 25(8)

Becks will adapt more an more but I do not think he will be the 20+ a season type, however, I do think he will be an excellent second choice striker that will always chip in with 10 or more a season, his stats show him as a very nice tool to have.

Oh, and he scored against the sh!te, at Analfield, the hero.

He's turning out to be quite a shrewd bosman signing. I don't think he'll ever be our main man but he seems capable of becoming a very worthy second choice center forward at this level. I thought even aside from the goals that the game against Sunderland was his strongest so far. Was a big ask asking him to play on his own against Terry and Ivanovic last week, and he didn't trouble them much to be fair, but he showed an admirable work rate and eagerness to impress.

I think the second half of the Anfield derby is when the penny dropped for him. After a worryingly toothless first half he seemed renewed and obviously took his goal really well. I've had alot more faith in him since then.

Can't think when we last had a front two who compliment eachother as well as he and Saha...Campbell and Jeffers maybe?

I would disagree with that mate, i think he is capable of being our main striker, what i dont think is that he is capable of playing as a lon man up front. Im 100% sure he can score 15 - 20 goals a season - given games, i think the majority of our our support underestimate him - significanlty.

When you think he has scored in a derby, last minute scremers and chipped in with one of the best goal per minute ratios in the league - what more could we possibly ask of him - hes done superbly well.

Its been so long since we have had a striker of his style we really dont know how to judge him, we atre used to the Physicality of the Yak and Beattie, AJ working the flanks - that we really dont know how to judge a striker who is all about goals - as Super Jermaine Beckford is.

He needs a run in the side to show how good he can become,i reckon moyes could help him to become a top player.

I like the way he plays off the shoulder of other players, he's different to Louis, Tim, Yak et al, they use their strength to shield and lay off turn or shoot, Jermaine is quick, plays off the shoulder. I love his kick and run against Sunderland, havent seen that done for years.
