Opinion are mad mate, thought he was gash myself. Thought a lot of good players around that time were called great far to easily. Cole, Neville, Beckham and a few others - good players, but far from great.

Mad thing is the greatest English player of the time was shunted for some others……Paul Scholes, now there was a truly great player.
Haha your either pissed or on the wind up

Dennis Irwin was a great LB to be fair but when I go back and watch 80s and 90s football (early-mid 90s) the quality of football and overall athleticism is so far behind modern day football its crazy... the gulf in quality gets even more mental you start watching 60s and 70s football.

There's an argument there were better footballers but not better athletes. Some of the conditions and pitches back then. Todays are mint condition carpets in comparison. A few factors come in when comparing the different era's.

Always liked him as player, and reckoned he was always harshly criticized by media mainly because he was black man who had something more about him than just football, as in some intelligence.

Saying that he does have a silly cockney twang life is full of compromise.

Welcome aboard the good ship Goodison Mr Cole.

I always think the Baines and Cole debate is closer than what people make out. I remember making a point of watching the pair when we played them and Baines a lot of the time came out on top imo.
Winning things is the edge Cole had over Baines...

Who told you that mate lads on HT on Sky Sports trying to flog a subscription.
Ashley Cole is only considered great because his mates in the media are conspiring to use Ashley Coles status to flog Sky subscriptions??!

Are you still on the ale from celebrating celtics win?

The big plus for cole was his pace. He was a top left back and the game against Ronaldo where Ronaldo couldnt burn him for pace really showed he was up there at that time as good as any.
Id say baines as an actual football player. Very close that one. I might even say baines was technically a bit better.
But i'd still choose cole.
Two very good left backs.

You spelt Denis Irwin wrong mate,

Stuart Pierce would be up there with England’s best, Cole could only dream of having that type of influence on a team.

Id have Leighton ahead of Cole too.

Easy to look good in great teams or assembled with millions. Even then I thought he was bit overratted in the English media, because he was English and cultivated those front page headline profiles.

I think the great footballers stood out more when the general athleticism was less.

It’s why Messi and Renaldo have been so remarkable.

Nar lad my eyes told me watching him be absolutely boss and dominate every single attacker he faced for 10+ years, winning every trophy their is to win in his playing career

Stuart Pearce better mate kinell hahahaha worse shout than starting Townsend at CDM that

Not a child of Italia 90 mate.

He went into two teams established in terms of winning trophies, hardly up there with the Rumbelows Cup. How did he get on with England, damp kech it.

You think he was better than Philip Lahm, when you say he was the best left back in the world at the time, that amazes me.

Caught the big match on tv other day. Was a spurs game from the 70s and they had a player called alfie con. It wasnt a pitch. It was a cow field. But he was going on so many mazy runs with the ball at his feet under control.
Just dont see that anymore. I think half the players today would refuse to play on them.

If clever is thinking Stuart Pearce was a better footballer than Ashley Cole then I'm OK where I am thank you.

Would reverse myself.

All opinions mate, we both know different times, always admired Pierce as a influence and leader - when you can be that influential on a game from left back it’s indictube of a very good player, different qualities though I’d accept. Big difference looking the part in ready made Arsenal & Chelsea than, dragging Forrest to cup finals - when they meant something and England to a. World Cup semi when they meant something to.
