Portsmouth won the FA Cup in 2008 and are now in League One. But I don't make the leap from that to "winning the FA Cup means you'll get relegated" or "trophy wins mean you're club will basically go under". Individual examples mean nothing at all.

Are you sure massive, massive, massive amounts of money and stellar squads had nothing to do with Mourinho winning the league titles by the way? ;)

Spurs got 4th spot and haven't got any further. Arsenal are in the Champions League every year and haven't won a trophy for donkeys. There's a way to look at it from both sides.

How often does a team who hasn't won the league or CL win it whether they're in the CL or not?

It's success that breeds success not CL football.

Probably due to the fact that Chelsea's reserve FA cup team should still beat anyone outside the top 6. They barely gave a flying [Poor language removed] when they beat us in 09 as they win it all the time without trying. The likes of Arsenal and Spurs have to rest players too, for CL qualification and competition but their squads are weaker and more likely to cock up and go out. They will win trophies though. They have decent squads that can deal with CL football and the premier league. That CL money is important, though. It's what buyers want and owners are asking their managers for these days. No one without champions league football wins FA cups more than once every decade or so. The game is run by money. To get to the top, you need CL football.

Do I want a long term future (say, 20 years from now) where Everton are still scrapping around the coat-tails of the big boys (at best) and have a couple of domestic trophies to our name because we put it before anything else? No. I'd rather we at least tried to break that "glass ceiling" and bring the good days back rather than the mid 90s. Putting domestic trophies before CL qualification won't bring 1. Many trophies 2. Any hope of challenging at the top of the league. Why? Money. See Chelsea's FA cup record.

It isn't CL money that wins trophies it just makes a dent in the debt.

If buying trophies is the name of the game the bar was set by Abramovich and now Mansoor. Utd have been at that financial level since Busby raised the club like a phoenix from the Munich ashes becoming the club of choice if you lived on a farm.

I'll have it if we can get it but I know one thing if we could win one trophy, it wouldn't matter what it was, it would be worth more to football followers and to the fans of this club than any tainted bauble purchased by those 3 clubs.

it would be proper football.

Firstly i disagree that Chelsea 'were not bothered' about winning the FA Cup, i doubt you'd find a Chelsea fan in the land who would say so. People who say fans of other clubs don't care about trophies because they're competing in Europe are kidding themselves.

The only important difference in this discussion between qualifying for the Champions League and winning the FA Cup is that one guarantees you a trophy.

Champions League winnings are not going to change this club long term.

Relative to how we'd have reacted to winning that day or how they reacted to winning the CL, they really weren't all that fussed.

Have to disagree with the last point. It's certainly not that clear cut, anyway. If we were to invest that money wisely in the squad we have currently, like Spurs, we could make CL football a more regular occurrence. In 05, we simply weren't ready. Nowadays, we're a few good squad additions away from being every bit as good as Arsenal or Spurs in every dept. It doesn't guarantee trophies, but it makes them easier to attain.
