How often does a team who hasn't won the league or CL win it whether they're in the CL or not?

It's success that breeds success not CL football.

I can just imagine if we were to qualify and reach the group stages next season, suddenly people would be expecting we'd buy £10m players left and right.

It's a joke.

I think the argument which lies at the base of it is stupid anyway but yes, if somebody wanted to claim that CL qualification would make some big difference to the club then you'd have to say top 3. Top 4 adds a hurdle which we've failed to cross before.

What's the difference between getting to an FA Cup final and getting to the Playoff for the Champions League?

If you win, you win. If you lose, game over, may as well not done anything.

Both are an event, a one off winner takes all affair, yet the Playoff offers significantly more financial reward than the FA Cup and significantly more European prestige and momentum for the club overall.

So other than a day out at Wembley and a p*ss up for all involved, what is practically so important about the FA Cup - given you're advocating having a go at that but laughing off trying to get fourth place in the league as a "hurdle".

Because if you win the final you get a trophy.

I'm boggled that I have to explain why winning trophies is good.

Right, so if UEFA gave a nice shiny trophy to the winner of the Playoff final, what then?

I'm boggled that a shiny bit of metal means more to Evertonians than qualification to the top tier of European football.

Think you'll find it's the history and prestige of the competition, not the actual physical object.

'And if, you know, your history....'

Are we arguing that the 1986-87 league win meant nothing then? If European football is the only goal.

And all dixies trophies were useless too.
