Spurs, Motherwell, hearts and us have all never been in since. Leeds, Necwastle, Villarreal, Boavista and Deportivo were all relegated.
Hell, Apoel reached the quarters of the CL and haven't won their league since. And they play in fecking cyprus.
Not an English club, imprudent spending to achieve the end resuly or not in the modern era.
Comparing the Cypriot league to the ramifications of finishing 4th in the English Premier League is massively missing the point.
The better, more obvious example you could have made is Liverpool after Istanbul. They won it and then plummeted dramatically, but you can't account for bad use of the opportunity and stupid spending.
If you gave Moyes the £9m from playing and winning the qualification round, complete with the enhanced profile of the club from mixing it in Europe's premier competition, then we obviously attract a better quality of player and there's a much bigger chance of kicking on than there is from the pittance offered in terms of finance and prestige in the FA Cup.
I think you make it difficult for yourself as a fan if you start weighing up the values of competitions and the like. It's easy to get so hung up on it you forget to just enjoy the footy. Watching your team win is the best part of success, looking at trophies and league tables and balance sheets isn't fun for very long.
How are Leeds, Newcastle, Spurs and us not the modern era. We are the only four english clubs to play in the CL this century without winning what you call big trophies.
And two were relegated and none of the four have even been in it twice let alone won trophies off the back off it. It's a duff strategy.
Neither we or Newcastle have played in the Champions League proper this century, Leeds was based on a ridiculous financial strategy that was never going to work and is not comparable to us, and Spurs haven't done too badly at all since qualifying. Really deep squad, the profiles of key players enhanced massively, and memorable wins over Inter and Milan that defined them as a European side and have since attracted really good players to the squad and meant inflated fees for those they have sold.
They're on course to finish in or around the top four ever since. That was only 2011 and they finished 4th last year and would have qualified again if it weren't for Chelsea.
And finally, you're kidding yourself if you think qualification for the Champions League, or even reaching the last 8 of the thing would have a big enough financial impact to make a noticeable change to Everton in the long run. Look at Spurs, they did it, and where are they now ? Finishing 5th, there or thereabouts. Not seriously challenging the top spots in the Prem and certainly not threatening the Champions League elite.
So? They didn't win the league did they. I want us to win trophies and I see no reason at all to think that finishing 4th helps you do that.
