I think, since we won it in 1995, only Portsmouth have won it and been outside the Champions League places domestically at the time. I might be wrong on that but looking at the list I'm not far off.

How often does a team who hasn't won the league or CL win it whether they're in the CL or not?

It's success that breeds success not CL football.

I think the argument which lies at the base of it is stupid anyway but yes, if somebody wanted to claim that CL qualification would make some big difference to the club then you'd have to say top 3. Top 4 adds a hurdle which we've failed to cross before.

There is the argument that CL football makes the club more attractive to buyers. If we could offer them that, surely we'd have a better chance of getting that oil oligarch, sheikh
