Your Time Is Gonna Come

AF's put my Celtic point a lot better, cheers.

Regarding Spurs, they've won a couple of League Cups without finishing 4th (more success than us) and I think they've achieved what they have in the last few years due to a very good manager for them in Redknapp, who despite the saggy skin and tax dodging does possess some ability as a leader.

Agree about the Moyes at Spurs thing, in fact they may have done even better as I think he's a better manager than Redknapp.

Didn't the Spurs owners also invest a lot of money into the team over the last 5 years? They haven't purchased players from Champions League money alone have they? Genuine question.

Indeed, but the League Cup win came from that investment also - they spent something daft like £110m over two seasons (07/08 and 08/09) to get the Champions League qualification in 09/10. They won that solitary cup just by sheer money and the lack of will from their rivals to compete properly in it.

Since the Champions League participation and high profile games against Inter, Milan and Real Madrid, they've sold players for vast amounts of money because their profiles have gone through the roof, and are being linked with top European players every transfer window because there's a realistic chance they'll compete at the top level - Moutinho, for instance.

So basically, since qualifying for the Champions League, they haven't needed to bankroll as heavily as they simply sell and reinvest.

It does make me laugh when people talk about Spurs "plummeting" since the Champions League... They've been fantastic for the last three years, but the sad fact is that Man United have a solid base to build on and have the money in reserves if needed, Arsenal have the consistency that so many years of Champions League football has built them, and Chelski and City have thrown mind-boggling cash at the league and blown it away.

That's why, for a club like Everton, if you get a tiny chance to break that top four, you drop everything else and take a proper run at it, because the chance might not come around again. And if you break the top four and win the biggest cup final there is for a club like ours in modern football - the ECL Playoff - then you change your club long term. You might not qualify the next year, but you get the prestige, honour and, yes, the money that comes with competing in that competition.

2005/06 - Spurs finished 5th.
2006/07 - Spurs finished 5th.
2007/08 - Spurs finished 11th.
2008/09 - Spurs finished 8th.
2009/10 - Spurs finished 4th.
2010/11 - Spurs finished 5th.
2011/12 - Spurs finished 4th.

It's the Ramos years that are the blip. Not the last few.

They also spent the same if not more on transfers pre CL money then they do now. They're just a very riuch club.

I just picked the last five seasons tbh. The times they finished 5th where the years when they were below the top tier during the years there was a very defined "Sky Four".

They did indeed spend a lot more to achieve Champions League football, but that's because of their circumstances as a club when compared to Everton. As you say, they're a very rich club, but to say Champions League football hasn't helped them is simply wrong.

And I see the troll is back... trolling. Surprise, surprise. He must have got the Matt Damon handbook for Christmas.

Hmmm. That's an interesting argument. I didn't quite understand what you were saying before but now I do.

I think I need to think about it for a bit and work out if I actually disagree.

Basically I think we all agree that to win anything in football it's far more important to have millions and millions of pounds available to invest than to qualify for the Champions League. See, it always comes back to Kenwrong (y)

"If you want to keep your best players you need top European football because they want to be involved in that.

"I agree with Arsene Wenger that finishing in the top four is the equivalent of winning a trophy - even if you don't get to parade silverware.

"I don't know whether every financial problem would be solved just by qualifying.

"But, for me, it would have an absolutely massive impact in terms of keeping the players I have and bringing in new faces."
