Would you offer Phil Neville a one year contract in January?

Why do people do this "He was great in (game x) last season" thing?

Jo was boss against Bolton 3 years ago but it doesn't mean i'd have him in my team.

I think LT is focusing on what Neville does, when he should be focusing on what he doesn't do.

After Gibson went off and Neville filled his spot against West Brom, there were plenty of times he was on the ball going into their half and just stood there, contemplating before picking a nowhere five yard sideways pass. He can not pass, he has no vision and his crosses are the worst I have ever seen from an Everton player. He can do a shift defensively but his lack of pace is a problem there. Offensively it's like playing with 10 men -- and let's not forget he isn't a CB. As a RB you get forward and need to be able to cross (Hibbo has worked on this part of his game and has improved). As a CM -- even a DM -- in games where we're not on the back foot for 90 minutes, you will get forward.

As we don't have a playmaker in central midfield, someone like Gibson who can be an outlet for defenders and can indeed pick a pass, is a bare-bones necessity. Neville can not do this. He can not do a lot of things, and he gets worse each season. Which is understandable as he's 35 and not superhuman like Distin.

NOP, look how well we are playing since cahill has left the team, getting neville out of the team would have a similar affect,
His influence on games is getting less and less, he will be 36 in jan his finished at the end of the season.

The thing about this, is people are being so harsh and unappreciative of a person who came from Man Utd and fancied Everton as another big club. No-one can doubt his desire and commitment. He's given everything, he's made the most of what he's got, and he's clearly gonna be a good coach/manager one day. I hope he gets a one year contract, I doubt he'll make many starts but what a good name and character to have at the club. People saying yes as long as he's not a regular are ok in my book.

No-one in their right mind would doubt his attitude and commitment.

I seriously doubt his ability as a Premier League footballer though, especially as a midfielder...and throwing 60k a week at the guy doesn't buoy me either.

I said yes but on the condition that he is not a regular and is literally used only during an injury crisis and never ever in midfield.

which is why its got to be a No, i'm happy enough to have him filling in at RB but as long as he's around he'll play centre mid which really is mind boggling - i've no doubt he'll start against newcastle there, i'd be shocked if fellaini gets moved back into the middle...

Fact is this- he played well against United in central midfield- against the joint favourites for the league. He can play at right back and central midfield if needed- even left back if we were short.

Last season showed Moyed isnt afraid to drop him and the older he gets the less game time he will get and will organically move into a coaching role. I like Phil, hes a good captain and on his day a decent premier league player.

We need a squad not just a first 11 and I think time will show that he will be fazed out like AJ, Yakubu, Cahill, Stubbs etc etc. Moyes isnt afraid to lose big names to benefit the side, I just think Phil is too big an asset to just let go when our squad is so small and he proves that he can still do a job.

Don't see how you can say that when Cahill played the lion share of games last season despite being badly gash for most of it. Yakubu went because he fell out with Moyes/was a lazy git, and AJ went for a crazy price tag.

And Neville actually made more appearances last season than he did in the two before that, he also made around the same number of appearances in the league. Still played over 2000 league minutes too, the equivalent of 22 full PL matches.

If he was willing to half his wage and accept a lesser role then yes, I would. I can't see that happening though so it would be best to move on. His legs went about two years ago.
