Why Roberto Martinez's Style of Play Will Make Everton an EPL Threat

So I just watched the whole match, and I have to say that it was really remarkable how we played ourselves back into it in the last 20 minutes. I just dont think that would ever have happened under Moyes - we would have just fallen deeper and deeper until we were scuffing clearances off our own line.

Also, we finished the match with Barkley, Stones, Deulefou and McCarthy on the pitch. Again, simply wouldn't have happened under Moyes.

Hugely optimistic. Its early days and Moyes is a tough act to follow, but Martinez has shown us that he is very much his own man, and when you approach football like with the mindset that the only obstacle to winning is yourself, then there is no reason why he cannot be successful and deliver us that CL spot.

Yep.

The way that game panned out in the latter stages shows what a dinosaur Moyes was.

Looking forward to when that tactical genius has to deal with the CL conundrums he'll be set...bit of a different challenge to beating a 10 man Palace outfit.

Moyes did well for us, but for me I never associated him with the "School of Science" that is synonymous with our club. He christened us as The Peoples' Club and thats how his reign was characterized. He made sure we did the basics - Big on effort, commitment and discipline, but not the expansive, attacking type of football that won us championships and made us Great.

Moyes would have brought Barkley off and put Heitinga on. In fact, he would have started with Heitinga in midfield

Mirallas was on the half way line when they had corners in the last 15 minutes. I couldn't believe my eyes.

This is the best thing about Roberto.....we no longer have cleared corner balls heading straight back at us on account of there is no Everton player available to knock the clearance further up the field.

Well said. Loved the positivity.

Watch the last game of the season again. 1-1 at HT, very even game... Moyes goes defensive (brings Heitinga on for Anichebe) 2-1 down... Barkley on the bench (confidence is sky high after playing well against Arsenal and Spurs), does he bring him on looking for an equaliser?

Nope.

For 11yrs, every time we kicked off, we would pass the back, only for Hibbert and Co. to pump it upfield to the opposition. True story.

We need to be a little carefull with the moyes bashing. However he did it he changed us from relegation fodder to challanging and being in Europe. His last season ended in 6th and always had us best of the rest.

I love the fact RM had us coming back into that game last 20 instead of sitting back but it's 1 game. Lets see how we feel when we lose points due to not shutting up shop.

Hopefully we gain more points than we lose RM way, because we sure did moyes way as frustrating as it was.
Not a defending moyes ****ging Roberto post btw....just saying like.

Its not really Moyes bashing, its comparing the two and how they do things different. I wish some of the fans would stop being so defensive over Moyes. We're just pointing out the different, like not having everyone back for corners in the last 20 minutes, letting Barkley play 90 minutes, not bringing Johnny on.

"If Martinez perseveres with this approach and continues to add a few stylistic fits, his methods should soon see Everton return to the top seven". Bit daft considering we finished 6th last season.

What i'm seeing at the moment is players trying to get used to a new system, having a few teething problems with it it but nothing major that more practice won't iron out and a team that under pressure reverts to type, i.e falls straight back into defensive sit back mode and treat the ball like a hot rock.

When Barry and McCarthy were on we saw a difference in the middle with 2 lads who aren't afraid to receive the ball from the keeper turn and look for options. It's a side transitioning and it's pretty obvious watching them at the minute. In my opinion.
