Why Roberto Martinez's Style of Play Will Make Everton an EPL Threat

Moyes was a barbarian in the modern game.

I still cant get my head around his United appointment. A team known for its buccaneering style of play and taking big risks when they're required employing a won nothing Mr Conservative. I'm still convinced its a massive practical joke and they'll all start laughing and pointing at OT one match soon, drag him from the dugout and replace him with Jupp Heynckes.

No, not that one. The one I'm talking about was a December game.

EDIT: This one.

It was midweek.....freezing it was.

We scored twice wearly on through Baines and Timmy.

The rest of the game was like the Alamo.

Citeh scored a goal halfway through the second half and the remaing twenty or so minutes were the longest I have ever spent at a football ground.

I think that was the game their ex-chief exec chucked one of Directors out the box for joining with the Blues singing...."2-1.....and we spent f*** all...."......:)

It was a great night.

Yeah that one - amazing performance from the players but we hung on playing attack vs. defence for over an hour after actually dominating the first 20 minutes. On another night we'd have lost that 5-2, it was mental.

That game summed Moyes up for me; all his good qualities and bad ones in 90 minutes of football. Never been so happy with a result but so bloody frustrated at how we got it!

...like everybody else, I was delighted with the Chelsea result. I don't think there's any doubt that we are adopting a different approach under RM. I would have a note of caution, certainly during the transition. The performances up to Chelsea had been underwhelming, particularly in respect of tempo and we wont always have the atmosphere generated on Saturday. Lukaku could be a significant difference, but we have had trouble winning games we have dominated and this might be the case for a while.

The funny thing is, the following season he took almost the exact same team there, made the now infamous "kniife to a gunfight" remark and we actually played a lot better football that day than the previous season in a 2-0 reverse.

Barry will make a world of difference to that though mate. A player like that helps the rest of the side five yards further up the pitch, full backs are able to make more darting runs off the ball out wide etc. because you have the confidence in knowing that if a loose pass is made, you have a player who can more than likely mop it up and allow you time to get back.

We've missed Gibson like crazy for a similar reason. Fellaini/Osman didn't work as Felli is box to box and Osman is offensive minded and, to be blunt, quite lightweight and off form. We've needed that water carrier like Barry or Gibson against the weaker sides badly.

I'm genuinely excited about our side. Losing Fellaini is a massive blow but that last bit of business in the window made us stronger overall - and we still have funds to strengthen if we're in contention for something in January.

Good times.

Agree with lots of this. Lukaku definately brought in to be that special player that can take lesser chances or make something from nothing.

I actually think we will do better away from home under Martinez though. Our style suits playing away. we can frustrate opposition fans and control games, it has the added bonus of the players not feeling the pressure from us...moaning and groaning that were not getting it forward quick enough and breaking teams down etc.

When any team comes to GP this season expecting to win we will give them all a proper game.

Agree with you mate.

I think teams outside the moneybags elite are going to look at us and think they're far better staying on the ropes rather than going toe-to-toe with us. Hopefully as you say the physicality of Lukaku can be the difference. I also think with McCarthy and Barry in the CM berths now we'll shift the ball about a lot more purposefully and quickly and shift our opponents out of their comfort zone a bit more to create opportunities.

The pattern is set though: ownership of the ball with us trying to make it pay.

The most signicant moment of the match on Saturday, IMO, was the Barry tackle which saved the certain goal from Eto'o.

That's what got the crowd raised from its torpor.

Roberto will need to learn that there are certain things which work for certain teams and EFC is a club which wears its passion on its sleeve and the Goodison faithful will play a very significant role when we are given sommat to get excited about.

The tkli taki is all well and good but it needs to be mixed up with some more robust and direct play on occasion.

I have to say there were time on Saturday, before the goal, when myself and people round me were shouting to get the ball in the box instead of passing and passing and passing allowing defenders to cover.

And the goal itself was a good old fashioned Everton type of a goal.

And this is why I think Lukaku will be very important......his style of play will have the punters off their seats and yelling away in a fashion which will unsettle the opposition.

Roberto Martinez could take yer mar to Nandos on a date and casually finger her under the table, without permission, as he speaks gently to her and she would come back and rate him as an absolute gentleman.

No no hahaha I eensist on a Delta as it is a raining no? Gracias for a phenomenal evening. I call in the week again"

Bet he'd get the wing roulette too, and constantly change the order of them on the plate until he was perfectly happy.
