What if Moyes had today's budgets?

Would Everton have won more under Moyes with today's spending power?

Phil Neville would of cost £20m

It's funny because it's true.

Kilbane would be worth £27 million

Pembridge and Gemill £15 million each.

Carsley £30 million (I rated Carsley, so if Morgan Schneiderflaps is worth 24 million...)

Bilyetdinov approximately £45 million.

Beattie £25 million

Not sure where I got the above figures from as a point of comparison in today's transfer market.

So yeah, Christ knows what any of the truly talented of the Moyes era would fetch (Arteta, Baines, Pienaar)

When Moyes had money, he bought Bilyaletdinov, Andy Johnson (who for me, flattered to deceive after a good start), Per Kroldrup and Beattie.

Moyes was best at getting a bargain. Think Arteta, Cahill, Lescott, Baines, Martyn and to a lesser extent John Stones.

If Moyes had money now, we'd be playing 11 Tony Hibbert's still.

You mean he'd have invested in a cloning unit? The man's sick!

Don't want to be sticking up for Moyes because he's a bit of a turnip but him replacing Alex Ferguson was pretty much an impossible task. That and his loyalty to his own back room staff utterly fcked him.

Bringing his own people in to Utd was the prob the boldest decision of his career and is what real Leaders do. I'm the future, and we're doing things my way. Obv you live or die by those decisions, and it buried him. Respect him for trying, though.

The aris-covering, politically astute thing to do would have been to keep Mike Phelan et al on the books so you've got a few scapegoats up your sleeve. Hit a sticky patch of results and clearly it's down to the old guard not responding to your training methods, perhaps we need to shake up the first team training staff etc. His did keep Giggs, but there is a man who speaks with forked tongue, and Moyes was never going to out manouevre that specimen.

Lol. Ok. 5 goals across 3 world cups, leading goal scorer for Australia, our highest scoring prem midfielder and third on all time prem scorers. Away goals at Anfield, Emirates, Etihad, Stamford Bridge, White Hart Lane. Yet the best he gets is ‘useless with the ball at his feet’. Half of Martinez’s players that you worshipped won’t get anywhere near what Cahill has done.
He was a poacher, not an accomplished midfield player.

He's have finished 5th still.

Moyes didn't progress because he held the team back not the money available. As much as more money would have got better players, they still would have played the same way.

At a push maybe seeing the likes of essien hazard and the like who he wanted but when did he ever sign a young player for the first team?

I dunno mate, he had about 3 good players and they were decent like.
De Gea
Evra
Ferdinand
Rooney
Mata
Vidic
Wellbeck
Van Persie
Valencia
Kagawa
Fellaini
Lingard
Young
Carrick
Smalling
Jones

...there's eight amongst that lot still in this United team now.

Pretty sure his crucuate ligament injury finished him not Moyes. Also Arteta and Pienaar has more flair about them than any of the cowards that came since. He gets panned for long ball football despite having the midget gems and playing two of the best attacking full backs in the league. 07-10 was our best prem football without a doubt in terms of quality and style.

It was unfortunate for us that during that period the PL had a "top 4" that was as strong as it's ever been. Arguably the greatest Utd side ever. Abramovich backed Chelsea, Arsenal who were far stronger then than today and the RS who were also very good. Each of these teams reached CL finals and semi finals regularly so the opposition we were up against was tough.

1st to 6th.

That says it all.

He couldn't handle good players and failed.

Was worse than that... 1st to 7th with 25 points fewer than the year before (although the 89 points the year before was quite flattering on the actual quality of that Manchester United squad.

It did have a lot of good players, but some in decline (e.g. Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Van Persie), some yet to reach current levels (e.g. Young, Lingard) and the usual sick bed inhabitants (Jones, Walbeck).

He did horrible in the transfer market with Fellaini in the summer and only Mata in January (and they needed a striker more than another midfielder).

Despite those mitigating factors, he did not know what to do with the talent....the 81 crosses they had during a draw to Fulham highlights how bereft of ideas Moyes really was.

Spot on. Good analysis mate.

I think it would have been hard for Moyes to win the title in his first season, but slipping to 7th was appalling. It goes a long way in answering the OP question.

Truth is he had some really good sides in the late Aughts. What if he'd had the money to go get a quality striker (Yak's one great season excluded)? When I think of all the band-aids we had to use upfront over the years...when the rest of the team was pretty damned good.

Sure it's been said already, but he had his chance to prove himself, the miserly egomaniac, and he wilted under the pressure, just like the sides he built.
