What if Moyes had today's budgets?

Would Everton have won more under Moyes with today's spending power?

We had the 7th largest wage budget when Moyes was here. We still have the 7th largest wage budget.

And we still spend less on transfer on fees than the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City and Man Utd.

Things haven't exactly changed dramatically on the money front. We might have slightly more money than we did ten years ago, but so does everyone else.
Don't care if we spend less than them tbh mate. City are in another league course they are but arsenal are terrible. Yeah we've been shocking the past few seasons but with our money and wages, we should be finishing above them.

If they wanna spend 75m on a player like liverpool then sound, let them. So far the money has only properly worked for Man City and chelsea back when big roman bought them. Watching them last night and all season, they look poor

Might have somthing to do with Moyes's decision to make us sit back on the 1-0 lead. Pure negativity, had we not scored that early goal, his tactics would of been to play for 0-0. We had all the momentum going into that cup final and Moyes was directly responsible for us losing it.

All the momentum? We lost our 3 best players to ACL injuries and Anichebe to a broken leg. Chelsea were within a minute of beating the best club side of all time over 2 legs and had been to the final a year earlier. They were one of the best sides in Europe smack in form and out for vengeance to get something from their season. We were a 5th placed prem team without their 3 best players. We got outclassed simple as that, nothing to do with Moyes sitting back.

Moyes was at his best when money was tight and he needed to spend wisely - we picked up bargains who had maybe lost their way a little bit in some cases and were usually quite clever with what we spent

When he actually had more money to spend, it wasn't always successful - look at the "splurge" following the 4th place season - Van Der Meyde, Davies, Kroldrup etc

Or look what happened when he had the Lescott money to spend - Bilyaletdinov, Heitinga and Distin (one of of three success rate)

Moyes' best came when he had a tight squad to choose from and relatively little money - the examples of how the money was used in the few scenarios where the purse strings were loosened weren't always a roaring success

Beattie, Yakubu, Johnson, Bilyaletdinov - all "big" signings by our standards at the time, but the hit rate was varied

As much as he cried out for bigger budgets, I'm not sure he would have been the man to use them wisely

He had the impossible task of doing as well as Fergie, which was never going to happen.

He also had about 10 players age 30+ or basically finished, and about the same amount of players who now play in lower leagues or for crap teams. Absolute coincidence, isn't it, that LVG then said that this squad needs refreshing and binned/signed about 25 thousand players?

There absolutely is getting round that. I know you absolutely despise him, but see through your anger for one second.
The only acceptable step backwards Moyes could make there was from champions to CL qualifiers given the class he had at his disposal.

He failed because he cant handle class.

Please don’t compare crabs like Barry and McCarthy to genuine talented midfielders like Arteta Pienaar Cahill.

haha you are messing surely? i hope so am going to bite anyway, Barry is in no way a crab, he is class and was class for us. He has also won more than any of the players named.

He’s a bargain basement manager and even that’s debatable now. Football has evolved a lot since he was our manager and judging by his last few jobs it seems he hasn’t.

He had time and job security here. He moulded a better than average team (eventually) that was able to secure consistent top ten finishes in a period when the quality of the PL - certainly attacking wise amongst *lesser* clubs was very poor.

Moyes cant be denied some credit, but he was basic and limited. Handing him better players wouldn't have changed that much. Tactically he wasn't astute enough to make use of them.

The class of Near-OAP, yes.

Check their squad, the only player who was good and not ancient was de Gea, and even then at the time he wasn't exactly the same de Gea he is today.

Bigger budget means bigger and better squad, more options etc so for that reason amongst others I think he'd have struggled. I always felt we had good runs under moyes when he had small numbers available and he squeezed every drop out of them

...and Cahill was virtually useless with the ball at his feet.

Lol. Ok. 5 goals across 3 world cups, leading goal scorer for Australia, our highest scoring prem midfielder and third on all time prem scorers. Away goals at Anfield, Emirates, Etihad, Stamford Bridge, White Hart Lane. Yet the best he gets is ‘useless with the ball at his feet’. Half of Martinez’s players that you worshipped won’t get anywhere near what Cahill has done.

He wouldnt have bought any players. He would go with what he had and and blown the transfer kitty by renewing leon osmans contract, tony hibberts contract and phil contract to the tune of lifetime contracts

When Moyes had money, he bought Bilyaletdinov, Andy Johnson (who for me, flattered to deceive after a good start), Per Kroldrup and Beattie.

Moyes was best at getting a bargain. Think Arteta, Cahill, Lescott, Baines, Martyn and to a lesser extent John Stones.

If Moyes had money now, we'd be playing 11 Tony Hibbert's still.
