What if Moyes had today's budgets?

Would Everton have won more under Moyes with today's spending power?

I really do need to get to Specsavers,I read this thread as what if Moyes had a budgie

The budgie has it's own twitter account mate, it tweets all the time.

He had wealth at United and killed them for a generation.

They're second in the league mate, won the cup final in 2016, and the league cup and the Europa League in 2017.

Generations move so much quicker these days.

He stabilised the club, mo doubt, some great signings and some poor ones but he had a work ethic ingrained in his sides that was our hallmark. His best sides were creative, skilfull and hard to beat but he suffered from having too small a squad a striker having a season to remember to convert those ingredients into silverware.

But, he had his faults - we suffered some humiliating defeats in a winnable competition like the Carling Cup - one semi represented a poor return there. His away record at the then big 4 was and remains to this day a disgrace - I'll never forgive him for surrending that Derby at Anfield because we had Sunderland at home in the Cup on the Saturday.

In the end he became uncontrollable as the Board were so scared of losing him he had too much influence on the club, imagine being allowed to run your contract down so you can leave with nothing? Poor Corporate Governance there - he was Everton in his eyes - and by the time he left the football had deteriorated to a position of simply being too scared to lose. 11 men in the box defending a corner and a lack of quality in depth to make any sustained progression. If he had more money? Unless it represented more than the teams above him, we'd be in the same position as now - often best of the rest and us wondering and hoping for something different to make us better.

He had wealth at United and killed them for a generation.

He wasn't backed properly by the United board in the transfer market, unlike LVG, who was backed, given more time, because of his reputation, and still failed.

Wether Moyes was good enough to turn them around is open to debate but I think it's pretty obvious that he wasn't given the same chance to succeed as LVG and that plays a massive part.

Lesser respected managers aren't afforded as much time as 'big' names and aren't given the same resources to spend on transfers, so it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy in one way, regardless of talent.

If he was given the same level of support as LVG, then it's fair enough to write him off as not being up to it, but when he isn't, it's pointless judging him in the same way. Problem is too many people look for confirmation bias, to back up what they 'want' to believe, rather than the truth.

Hard to say as it is all guess work. His budget wasn't brilliant at Everton and he stabilised the club.

My guess is that he was happy with the job he done being content that in monetary terms he was a success. Think he became scared of attempting to push the boat out and try to push further up the league. His contentment was too strong for that and before anyone claims he never had the money to push I feel he had enough assets on the pitch to be able to wheel and deal but wouldn't take the risk.....go with what we have got rather than use player sales. I know some player sales were forced upon him but felt he stuck with tried and tested rather than looking for possible improvements

He also had 11 years of basically no pressure and that does not happen anymore so he has to speed his build up nowadays and is being found wanting.

Did a fair job with us but became too egotistic and thought he was better than the club and thought we should be singing his praises.

His signings didn't excite me and I don't think he would make any difference now. 2 months after he left us, Roberto Martinez showed Moyes how to conduct business. Lukaku, Deulofeu and Barry on loan and McCarthy to bolster midfield. I know some signings were poor but Martinez seemed to have more pull than Moyes ever did. Lukaku would never have played for Moyes.

Please don’t compare crabs like Barry and McCarthy to genuine talented midfielders like Arteta Pienaar Cahill.

Technically, he was after Essien, Cech et al, before they made big moves, so he could spot a player, I just don't think he could organise an attack well enough- although, his last few seasons- if we had a Vardy or Costa- woof, we'd of certainly been a lot closer to top 4.

Would have been a great director of football. Had Stones Mustafi Dier and Manolas all at finch farm at one point. Wanted Ya Ya Toure, Hazard, Essien, Moutinho, Arshavin before they were household names.

I think we were a few players away from 5-10 extra points a season that would have seen us getting CL places from finishing 3rd/4th.

Anyone who moans about the signings he got wrong (Simon Davies was the worst for me) should be forced to look at what has followed since.
Any idea how far into his reign he had his analyst team/structure in place?

It's a difficult one to say. At the time I was convinced if he'd had £20m net spend each summer we'd have been right up there. Since then he hasn't exactly covered himself in glory though...

I will say that we were a lot closer to the top teams when he was around. We finished above Spurs on quite a few occasions, now they're on another level to us which is depressing.

Agreed.

I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt here.

I think peak Moyes would have done well with a proper war chest.

On the day, had Moyes left us alone and not made us sit back for extra time I still believe to this day we'd of won. His negativity at 1-1 in a cup final was nothing short of a disgrace.

Yep. After Saha scored Moyes immediately reverted to type and tried to defend a 1-0 lead for 89 and a half minutes. The writing was on the wall from that point.

Back to the OP...... Moyes may well have signed better players with a bigger budget, but as our experience this season shows, who knows if they could have played together well on the pitch. You could argue that a limited budget in a way helped Moyes, as he only had to bed in one, two or maybe max three new players each August.
