I was writing a bit of an essay as a response, but decided to stop.
I am sure that there is a significant amount of ultra-nationalistic Ukrainians especially under the guise of Bandera-ites. They may well not be Nazis but they are certainly cut from same cloth.
The Azov battalion were the equivalent of the SS in my view. They encouraged and would enforce anything that removed non-ethnic Ukrainian and especially if it was Russian. Since their capture in Mauripol, I think a big sigh of relief was probably heard from Kyiv too as much as disappointment at losing an army section that was fanatical in its fighting. Russia are not innocent and the Wagner Brigade are equally as bad.
Oh never be afraid of writing an essay mate, take it from me!
Ukraine, much like Poland, Hungary and a number of easter European countries has a significant problem with fascism. A lot of the "heroes" of independence they celebrate either worked directly with, had synpathetic views towards or enabled the Nazi government. It's quite rooted into the DNA of those countries, anti-communism is seen as synonomous to some degree, with sympathy to Nazism.
I think viewing the Azov bettalion as a moral equivalence of the SS is very fair. It is an explicitly Nazi organisation, who are recieving, funding, arms and support from the Ukrainian government. I am extremely concerned as to what will be happening in areas where they are the predominate force. It will be unsafe forlGBT, Jewish or BAME members in those areas.
It's a difficult one, as people will conflate having an honest discussion about these important issues, with supporting foreign invasion, when obviously the two things are distinct. The invasion will only strengthen such forces. On every level it's a disaster.
