Honestly I am not sure what else Putin expected they would do; certainly Finland would have no reason to believe any Russian announcement of “exercises near the border” wasn’t an invasion buildup ever again after this episode. IMHO Ukraine's biggest mistake was giving up its nukes. Their overreaction to Chernoybl and lack of foresight about their enemies, specially their enemy next door, has culminated in tragedy. In today's world, nukes are your biggest safety against power hungry maniacs, sadly.

All this is heartbreaking because Ukrainians are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

Russian conscripts are notoriously poor in terms of training and discipline. Their NCOs run their own regimes, which officers feed off with bribes and whatnot.
