I keep reading about Sgts. in the Russian army being in the early twenties (twenty-one ish) with a few years service at most, and there lies a major problem.
In the UK's combat formations (it's different in certain corps like REMEs), you're often talking about a minimum of ten to twelve years to be a Sergeant.
Even a Lance Jack will likely have more service than some of their senior NCOs.
