M them little ships would get knocked out the water in 30 minutes if Russia attacked. Token gesture.
Erm there’s a full US carrier battle group in theatre. I think Vlad would be mad to take them on.

1 x Carrier ((Harry S Truman)
1 x Full strike wing (70 strike/fighter ac)
1 x Ticonderoga guided missile cruiser
4 x Aegis equipped Destroyers
1 x Norwegian Frigate
1 x Spanish Frigate

Latest developments are that Denmark and Spain are dispatching naval assets to the region.

Denmark and Holland are sending Fighter aircraft to Bulgaria

US is now indicating that they will significantly increase their military presence in Eastern Europe (Romania, Poland and the Baltics).

The US also now has a full carrier battle group deployed in the eastern med.

France has indicated that it would be willing to send troops to Romania.

The U.K. and US are evacuating families and non-essential staff from their embassies in Kiev

Feels like we’re drifting toward a major Russia v NATO conflict
War and pestilence. Looks like we might be coming to the end. "We're doomed I tell ye. Doomed"

I've got to admit I haven't fully got my head around this issue. Putin's aims seem diffuse, and the Ukrianian government don't seem like anyone we should be supporting, and there are openly neo-nazi divisions within its army and police who have been carrying out programs against Jews and LGBT people for some time now.

It seems like a disaster waiting to happen to me.

Anyone care to provide a 101?
I live in Ukraine. This is my take on it.

A coloured revolution took place in Ukraine. Similar to what was attempted recently in Kazakhstan.

Russia and it's ally's moved swiftly to stomp out the Kazakhstan attempt. However when Ukraine was taken over they did very little to stop this. Lessons learned.

An American puppet was installed as president of Ukraine. ()

Since then Ukraine has let a lot of non Ukrainians into their government. Including offering an American lieutenant colonel the position of defense minister.

Russia's main navy base is in Sevastopol. In Crimea. Khrushchev allowed Crimea to be given as gift to Ukraine.

The 2014 so called Annexation was an attempt to reaffirm it's naval base.

A referendum was called to allow the people of Crimea to vote if they wished to join the Russian federation.

The people wished to join. However two other regions wished to join the Russian federation Donetsk and Lugansk after seeing in effect an American Coup d'état take over Ukraine.

Putin did not accept these bids.

Skip forward again, there is confrontation as America wishes to use Ukraine as a geo political pawn to either fight a proxy war or cripple Russia with sanctions.

America wishes to try use the threat of offering Ukraine Nato membership to provoke Russia into conflict.

America has a Monroe Doctrine where they demand no country interferes with South America. The Cuban Missile Crisis was about Russia challenging the Monroe Doctrine after America put Missiles in Turkey.

Having Ukraine join Nato puts Nuclear Missiles 5 minuets away from Moscow and an invasion force potentially on the border of their only Naval base that can reach the black sea.

This is a redline. Could you imagine if Nazi Germany setup shop in Dublin, how would the reaction be.

In my opinion the most likely outcome would be it boils over and becomes just kicked down the road.

But if Russia does invade Ukraine Russia would not face any opposition militarily from Nato and the Eu. And Russia could also invade from Belerus and other regions and totally overwhelm Ukraine.

Unless you want to risk you sons to die for America that is probably the best outcome.

Russia are being backed into a corner. They will have to risk sanctions rather than allow Nato to setup and potentially have their Navy made ineffective.

If it did escalate into further conflict.

Belerus. Kazakhstan would guard the flank of the region. Very likely the people of Poland and Serbia and maybe Greece would back Russia. China would not sit back and allow a total war be fought with forces that would try pickoff Russia and then turn attention to China, they would step in.

Russia and China could cut off America and Eu's medical supplies and gas and siege them.

There is the wildcard option of Iran Russias ally having 100s of thousands of missiles pointed at Isreal too and would see an opportunity to attack while their main protector United states engaged on multi front war.

There is very little chances of any of these situations playing out. Things will calm down in my opinion.

If Russia did invade Ukraine, the only real outcome you would see in response is a sanctioning as militarlity action here would be a stalemate at best.

I know its a computer game (albeit a realistic one) but a group of nerds I follow on Youtube play that matchup (US Carrier Group vs Russian Carrier Group or a Russian land-based attack) on DCS and it is remarkable how often the Russians win. Don't forget basically the entire focus for about forty years of the Soviet Navy, Soviet Naval Aviation and associated industries was taking out US carrier groups - their equipment is mostly designed for that purpose (compare for example the Harpoon with the Kh-22/32 or the P700) and they have a lot of it even now.

Personally I think the biggest deterrence to attacking a US Carrier Group is what the Yanks would do to whoever did it, not that it is impossible to do.

Vlad = Putin

Anyway - he’s not going to take a pop at the US. His eyes are fixed on Ukraine and I can’t see anything stopping him.

Just a matter of time now. How’s your Russian by the way?
Last 100s of years Russia has had to fight defensive wars on their land as time after time been invaded. It's been made clear the next war will not be fought on Russian soil but an offensive war as they have no choice but to not bring the horrors of total war back to the mainland again. Not an unreasonable position.

I personally would welcome a Russian liberation, maybe could bring back some morality and decency. In this city i live there is great towers full of degenerate porn being made and christ knows what else. I love this place but the people in my experience are at least 30% in favor of trying their luck with the Russians rather than the mess that is going on now.

крутой. Where in Ukraine do you live?

Rightly or wrongly you do not try to mess with a regions sphere of influence. You seen how America reacted over the Cuban missile crisis. Read the Monroe doctrine. Do you think it is just a coincidence that Taiwan and now all of a sudden Ukraine and Kazakhstan who has borders with China and Russia just explode.

America is lashing out. They know the writing is on the wall. Cynical attempt that will blow over.

So from your POV you would welcome Russian invasion and future close ties between Ukraine & Moscow?
I would like to see a president that actually has Ukraines best interest at the fore, not pro Russia per say and play EU, Nato and America and Russia off to get the best deal for Ukraine.

What benefit would Ukraine have from going to war with Russia, a war that they could not win and see their country used as a pawn in games they do not understand.

So do you speak Russian?
