Latest developments are that Denmark and Spain are dispatching naval assets to the region.

Denmark and Holland are sending Fighter aircraft to Bulgaria

US is now indicating that they will significantly increase their military presence in Eastern Europe (Romania, Poland and the Baltics).

The US also now has a full carrier battle group deployed in the eastern med.

France has indicated that it would be willing to send troops to Romania.

The U.K. and US are evacuating families and non-essential staff from their embassies in Kiev

Feels like we’re drifting toward a major Russia v NATO conflict

Not sure about conflicts, but the reinforcement of NATO forces on the border was always the likely outcome of this. We’ll probably see increased defence spending across the bloc too.

Which hopefully is what it's all really about.

I've got to admit I haven't fully got my head around this issue. Putin's aims seem diffuse, and the Ukrianian government don't seem like anyone we should be supporting, and there are openly neo-nazi divisions within its army and police who have been carrying out programs against Jews and LGBT people for some time now.

It seems like a disaster waiting to happen to me.

Anyone care to provide a 101?

Bread basket and black soil Ukraine... The country has the last most fertile soil untouched by industrial farming in the world. NATO and UN have long anticipated "food wars". There are other things like the gas, not much good if starving...

So basically asking to get invaded either by force of Russia or America with rampant capitalism, with that choices I'll take latter, lesser of the two evils.

As the environment goes belly up, Russia actually benefits vastly as huge swathes of the north become viable plus there's a new year round shipping route just waiting for us to thaw it out. I believe Ukraine's eastern regions with shale gas ready and waiting plus Crimea’s boxing in of the underwater fossil fuels is the big obvious natural resource "prize".

Unless the west is looking at Ukraine for food security and Russia wants to control it, this theory seems out there for me - though if in time it becomes apparent that this is the case then I will be the first to admit I'm wrong.

Mostly it's a bit of jostling and flexing. Russia wants it buffer state back under its control and the west don't want that. Poor old Ukraine doesn't get a say it appears.

I can't find it but there's a very interesting documentary showing how global warming will essentially displace a lot of the people in the "stans" and quite likely northwards into Russia alongside the inhabitable zone moving northwards as the South of the land mass becomes more and more arduous a place to live in.

It's a very 'interesting' event and may destabilise the whole region. Global warming will sure have an impact! At least we've not started building a dockside stadium.

All them little ships would get knocked out the water in 30 minutes if Russia attacked. Token gesture.
