Think its more a show of force. There are currently 2 steaming towards Chinese waters to do the same thing.

Key indicator for what America decides to do will be the B2s. They haven't budged from Missouri. Time to start worrying will be if they move to Aviano

I know its a computer game (albeit a realistic one) but a group of nerds I follow on Youtube play that matchup (US Carrier Group vs Russian Carrier Group or a Russian land-based attack) on DCS and it is remarkable how often the Russians win. Don't forget basically the entire focus for about forty years of the Soviet Navy, Soviet Naval Aviation and associated industries was taking out US carrier groups - their equipment is mostly designed for that purpose (compare for example the Harpoon with the Kh-22/32 or the P700) and they have a lot of it even now.

Personally I think the biggest deterrence to attacking a US Carrier Group is what the Yanks would do to whoever did it, not that it is impossible to do.

Reminds me of Malcolm Tucker threatening the UN Ambassador in In the Loop.

I would get out ASAP if at all possible. Being in a post-invasion scramble to get out is not at all advisable. This is why countries pull as much of their embassy staff as they can while still having a functional embassy in these situations. If your country is pulling embassy staff, you should get out.

What benefit would Ukraine have from going to war with Russia, a war that they could not win and see their country used as a pawn in games they do not understand.

It only takes one party to have a war, or a divorce. Fighting back just means that the political leadership isn't comfortable with what they think the invaders will do to them, and thinks that they have a better shot by ordering troops to shoot back than they do after fleeing the country. Ironically, the poisonings probably mean that any country where the troops are loyal will always shoot back, should the Russians invade.

Mostly it's a bit of jostling and flexing. Russia wants it buffer state back under its control and the west don't want that. Poor old Ukraine doesn't get a say it appears.
