Oh absolutely he is not going to get prize A, whatever that was. My comment was just that he knows what his prize A is, not that he is going to get it
Yes, agree that he knew what he originally wanted. I think that no amount of diplomacy in recent months would have successfully avoided the war because Putin will have thought, "Why should I negotiate and settle for something, when I can waltz into Ukraine militarily and have everything? " He wouldn't (and neither would I, to be fair) have thought there'd be such fierce resistance and such severe sanctions.

Now, he's in a position where he's being forced to accept he won't get everything, but hasn't decided what he'll accept walking away with, and what deal he can take without seeming a failure.

Why are you posting a clip from 2017? Why are the people in it protesting against Ukrainian soldiers?

What does this have to do with now?

The misinformation in this war is incredible.

Anyone know Ukrainian?
The protesters are Ukrainian shouting in both Russian and Ukrainian, singing Ukrainian national songs, shouting “Slava Ukraine” if this is from 2017 then the suggestion is that they are separatists protesting against Ukrainian soldiers? so why would they be singing Ukrainian nationalist songs if they want to be independent of Ukraine? I can’t see any scenario that makes sense other than them being Russian soldiers or separatists from DNR/LNR fighting for the Russians.

I disagree, I think there has been lots of opportunities to prevent what has happened diplomatically. Crimea’s status especially could have been resolved internationally.

We'll have to agree to disagree, then. There have, indeed, been opportunities for two reasonable opposing views to reach an accommodation, but one of the parties here is seriously unbalanced, with a deep-seated sense of grievance, and no regard at all for the value of human life. Just conceivably, in the very early Putin era, there might have been a chance for the West to convince him we were no threat and actually his mate, but not since then.

By the time he pinched Crimea, in my view he'd already decided to expand the Russian empire militarily, and used Crimea as a dry run, to get an idea of the international response. Since that was next to nothing, he'd just have been emboldened in his plan to snatch the rest of Ukraine and anything else he could get away with.

But that would have meant either Putin or Zelenskyy giving up the Crimea though, which was never going to happen through any negoatiation.

I disagree; with a comprehensive and fair discussion, and involvement from the rest of the world, a solution could have been reached.

What Russia did in 2014 was a disgrace; so was what Khrushchev did in the 50s (and what happened to the Crimean Tatars at Soviet hands earlier). Dealing with all that legacy diplomatically would have been far better than what actually happened.

I agree in principle however, this would still mean both parties giving up something they do not want to. I cannot see how any dimpomay would have made either party willing to cede Crimea for instance, they are not for turning.

Someone stating the obvious here...i applaud you ;)

Said the exact same myself...

101% hes a ghost.
WASHINGTON—President Biden is expected to announce a total of more than $1 billion in new military assistance to Ukraine’s government as early as Wednesday, according to U.S. officials, as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to make a plea to Congress for more aid to defend his country against Russia’s invasion.

The $1.01 billion is expected to include more of the same kinds of military equipment the U.S. says the Ukrainians need the most: antiarmor and antiair systems, including portable air defenses such as Javelins and Stingers. The money would come from the roughly $13.6 billion allotted for Ukraine in the omnibus budget bill Mr. Biden signed Tuesday.

Ghost, my arse, he's exceeding expectations.
