She's been fined and released. Fingers crossed that she doesn't get any further retribution.
Water to the Crimea for Spring.I was thinking about the timing of this invasion and why it occurred now rather than last year, two years ago, 6 years ago etc. Does anyone have a sense of why now? For example, it seems Putin has had an eye on Ukraine for a long while, and in 2014 why didn't he just continue with a full scale invasion soon after the Crimean/Donbas invasion? From a sanctions standpoint, having Trump in office might have tempered some of the USA sanctions (though not likely the NATO/UK ones) and would also be more likely lead to support from China (since Trump was far more "anti-China" than Biden). Was it due to the change in leadership in the Ukraine in 2019--did Putin seem to have a better relationship with Poroshenko--via Medvedchuk--and assume the he could keep P Poroshenko better under his thumb than Zelensky? As far as I can tell, there wasn't an increase in the rhetoric about NATO inclusion with Zelensky (though perhaps there was?). Could it have been Zelensky's much better relationship with European countries and USA than his predecessor? I could be missing something obvious, or perhaps it isn't obvious at all.
Thoughts?
I think sport played a role as well tbh. The 2014 invasion occurred after the Olympics similar to this invasion of Ukraine. Four years before and after hosting the World Cup as wellI was thinking about the timing of this invasion and why it occurred now rather than last year, two years ago, 6 years ago etc. Does anyone have a sense of why now? It wouldn't surprise me if the old Soviet-era tactics aren't used though. Her losing her job, her children unable to attend university, no overseas travel etc.Putin probably wanted to make her disappear but because she was high profile he saw it as a chance for a publicity stunt.
