I’d like to think that in potentially starting a world war the rationale would be slightly less ‘covert’ than that.
 
In my mind there are two people responsible for this apart from Putin. Merkel and Biden. Merkel because she spent the last decade undermining Germany’s power situation and basically giving it to Russia, and Biden because Afghanistan showed him up to be the weak president he is. Like him or loath him, would this have happened under Trump ?…America is seen as weak, the EU is seen as an absolute pushover. The West is stuffed…..

It did happen under Trump, pete - the conflicts been going on there for eight years. Do you not remember Helsinki?

No it's not. Its simplistic to compare any historic event, with different stakes, countries, relations and other specifics to any modern event.

Somebody mentioned Sudetenland:
Sudetenland is a region controlled by Austria-Hungary since the fifteenth century until Versailles in 1918. The region itself only got a name when the Germans claimed it when the Checho-Slowakians got it after the first WW. A majority was (not anymore) German speaking. There was never an invasion.

The Anschluss @ClausThomsen was referring to was broadly supported by both Austria and Germany. I don't see how this is even mildly similar. What can you do about that. Declare war?

Trump made the deal with the Taliban in Afghanistan. Biden just processed Trump's arrangements.
Did you see Trump when he met Putin? He was in awe of the man he (literally) owes so much to.

Trump was totally unpredictable and that was his strength. Everyone on the planet knows what Biden will do, or rather will not do……
