Well, realistically, they'd stay as far away as possible to not damage themselves...
While I'm far from a specialist, I suspect a nuclear detention on land delivered from a MIRV, which would each be in the Kt not Mt, wouldn't impact too much.

Obviously on land it would obliterate a lot, but a boat at depth should be safe from an attack on land.

Well, likely, but also - if you can afford the extra safety...

I've always thought the nuclear deterrent subs hide under the ice in the Arctic circle. They can surface through pretty thick ice can't they?

The range on the missiles is great enough to mean they don't need to be that close...

I'm sure you'll correct me though as your posts so far in this thread have been very insightful
See the reply from @Dylan Should answer your question

Not as thick as you'd think. It has to be baby (first year) ice (think 6ft for US boats, maybe 12 feet for the Russian Typhoon's)

I know what you mean but at the end of the day if a sub did fire off it’s nukes maybe the crew would survive but then there would be nothing to go home to once the inevitable retaliatory strikes went in. All pretty pointless really but that’s the game I suppose ?‍♂️

Hey, I will take this moment to plug the 1950's movie "On The Beach" with Gregory Peck (not the 2000's remake made for TV movie) It covers the aftermath of nuclear war really well. Warning, its quite depressing, but incredibly powerful.

That's the general US take. MIRVs in the 80-ish kt range. With high CEP's they are incredibly accurate and can (and will, if needed) be used for pin-point surgical strikes on strategic targets. We stay away from the air-burst city busters these days (though they do still exist)

Don't get me wrong, nukes can wreak damage like no other, but I think thanks to movies people vastly over estimate the immediate damage. Even Tsar Bomba (the 50Mt weapon the Soviets tested) would flatten a city, and the pressure wave would travel for several miles killing a lot of people, they won't gouge out huge holes in the planet.

Well aware, but what I meant - maybe might be safer back in the water.

Second thought now though, that the shockwave will create an actual wave as well, so it's the same thing.

I honestly hope we never reach that point anyway.

Genuinely, why "the Ukraine"? This has probably been asked here before but still...
not sure. I know that the western Canadian province of Yukon is known as 'The Yukon' and has been for ages.
Maybe when North Americans heard the name Ukraine, It sounded so much like Yukon, that a 'the' was also added.
I haven't read this anywhere, just a thought.

It means borderlands and saying "the ukraine" would've been normal... when they weren't a country.

Now I think it's a bit weird though.

Then again, not the most important thing currently happening there, was just wondering!

A dear departed friend used to be away for months at a time secretly hiding under the ice sheets ready for, as he used to say, "the day Russia kick off."

A shockwave from a land based weapon wouldn't create any meaningful sub-surface wave. And even if it did, it wouldn't effect a sub in the slightest. The nuke would have to detonate underwater, i would probably say less than 10 miles from the sub for it to be a danger.....(though that is purely speculation, AFAIK it isn't something that has been tested (or at least release publicly))
