Soz arbar me replying to my own post, but I’ve just had a lightbulb moment.

Q. Why are they planning to do this? Is it just to stop their people seeing the truth?

A. Nah they don’t give a flying one about their people. This is about something else but what?

IMO and this is just me I reckon they are planning to sever internet undersea cables as a way at hitting back at the world. I hope not as this will bring NATO into direct conflict with Russia.

It could be, though it could also be an attempt to do there what the Chinese have done with the Great Firewall.

We also said if they tried it we would see it as an act of war.

One indicator was that big naval exercise they conducted in Feb off the coast of Ireland was directly above the path of a large number of these transatlantic cables.

A second indicator was the cut in January of an undersea cable linking Norway to Svalbard. Following detailed investigation the cable cut was deemed to NOT been caused by a natural event.

I wonder if anyone has checked to see if they've left anything down there?

I think this was always on the cards, they’ve been practicing this for years and know where all the cables are. I think we should do what Russia has done so far and said if anyone from Belarus or Chechnya joins in the war, we’ll blow the crap out of them…..

Rosneft and Gasprom defaulting on bond repayments will ultimately result in asset seizures globally.

Expected step. One problem with the sanctions as constructed is that they remove almost all incentive for the Russians to pay their creditors.

Fortunately, their economy is small enough that this shouldn't result in 2008-style uncontrollable contagion in our financial institutions. If we tried to do this to China, there would be problems.

The ones they want are probably the ones associated with passive sonar systems. The Atlantic is too big to have a handle on where all the Russian boomers are all the time, using just surface and submarine assets. Picking them up at various points using passive sonar tells those assets where to look.

Disrupting inter-continental communications by bagging deep-sea fiber optic cables is just a bonus, if it all goes sideways.

I’ll need to have a look for it, however I am sure the US have previously remarked that this could be seen as an act of war if they did enough damage, which would be difficult.

@john jako and @Dylan would be the men to know, yet you’d think we’d probably try to sink their subs trying to do so. If we could of course.
They been cutting cables for years pal. Majority of cables will be out of service prior to cut. Without knowing much about the cables am guessing there is so many backup cables.

Can’t say much but I know the ‘yantar’ is in the public domain so can be googled. These yachts and fishing boats that rock around with like 60 radars and aerials on are dodgy as hell lol. All privately owned generally. Turn their GPS off and put some radar deflectors up to cause mayhem around nato areas.

What I will say, if you’re a British or US sub and your surveilling a Russian ROV/mini sub who is cutting a cable, you will do absolutely nothing. Just gather the intel and tell the government who will moan in a press conference. They would need to take out multiple cables at the same time to cause a full drop of connectivity and am pretty sure the Russians can’t as they couldn’t organise a pi55 up in a brewery.

Looks like Russia is aiming to cut itself off from the global internet by March 11

The worst thing is that the majority of Russians will welcome this move and say Russia needs "protection" from the evil West. It's a rotten society in Russia.

If we had started before the invasion then it would have made the war inevitable and probably have just brought it forward.

Yes he probably was going to invade anyhow but to not give dialogue a chance to succeed would have been a sad state of affairs. Also gave us the moral high ground too as Putin could have used the 'western countries are arming Ukraine' as a legitimate reason to go in.
What’s the point in intel then? Ukraine has always been on heightened alert due to their history with Russia. Also dialogue with Russia has a pretty poor outcome, history shows they generally do what they want anyways.

As far as military aid, well we were already giving some to Ukraine, so Putin could have used it as an excuse from the beginning.

The main reason behind Ukraine holding of Russia right now is down to the resolve of the Ukrainian people.

I would also like to know if the US really did share intel with China? If they did, then that’s disgraceful.
