Don’t think you can say that China is on the Russians side tbh after some of their recent financial actions.

I have this nagging fear that China is just waiting to see how things unfold.

If a major NATO v Russia escalation takes place there would be a strategic incentive for China to let us knock lumps out of each other before moving in to seize targets of opportunity like Taiwan, or areas in Eastern Russia. So much scope to get hideously messy on multiple fronts.

It would be mental to trade a small increase in % share of a decreasing market at the expense of market share in higher GDP countries. Could be wrong of course but just don’t see China risking that.

I don't think they're looking to trade markets, they're looking to add the Russian market (actually completely dominate it). If Nike doesnt sell shoes, they will, if Apple doesn't sell computers, Huawei or Redmi will. And so on. China said it will continue to do business as usual so that's telling.

I also have eastern European friends. My cousin is married to a pole. I have worked with Eastern Europeans in Ireland and here.

Poorly trained and resourced troops, who were apparently running out of food in staging areas, following inept tactics while using insecure communications.

What could go wrong? Add to that, an ex-colleague of mine said there are people on the ground organising the retrieval of lots of their technology.

This war is costing them now, and it'll continue to cost them for many years to come.

Will they try and replace the supply of Western goids of course but a) the ruble has collapsed against the yuan so ordinary Russians will have far less purchasing power for Chinese goods even before the likely severe recession b) China will be reading the small print of the Western sanctions and trying to figure out what they can do to skirt them but not break them bad enough to call down sanctions on themselves.
