And yet the Russian, far from artisan, have been keeping the heaters on in Europe ever since they developed pipelines to the West, through Ukraine of course
Yes. Because that's how international trade works. Russia doesn't gove gas away, it sells gas.

Russia is one of the two largest gas producing / exporting countries on earth. And Europe is their easiest and most accessible market.

Russia doesn't want Ukraine developing a gas supply industry and has carried out a full scale military invasion to prevent it.

Well this gets back to what the Ukraine is. Its much more simple to see Britain and Ireland as nations and peoples (oops, maybe not the best example), its not that straightforward with the Ukraine.
The Ukraine will either be in the hands of Western matkets (which are bringing us to extinction) or in the hands of Russia.
My take on this is that ideally Ukraine ends up in a federation of Eastern Europe that is not controlled by the old regime, they take a path away from Soviet authoritarianism that does not lead to the West, literally.
That they forge a path that can teach the West a lesson or two on what it's going take to survive. 'Russians, and 'Ukranians' forging a path together, and in so doing providinguch needed stability to the world.
Genuine question, do you think the UK feels more independent after Brexit? Or does it feel like the world is closing in on that independence.
Will the 'liberation' of the Ukraine change any of that.
The western markets are not bringing Russia to extinction. That's utter nonsense.

The western markets and their demand for Russian gas and (to a lesser extent) oil supplies nearly half of Russia's overseas trade income. And it's not a small volume or small sums of money. It's huge.

That's why international trade is so important for all countries to develop and grow. That's what Russia is trying to stop Ukraine from doing, by stealing the regions of Ukraine where oil and gas have been found.

Russia is also the worlds’s number one producer of wheat and has a enviable amount of other economic assets.

Russia enjoys a geographic position between three major markets (Europe, China and Japan) allowing comparatively easy access for their own domestic production and the ability to facilitate trade between them. This is only likely to increase with global warming when the northern shipping routes are open more months.

If the Russian leader focused more on improving the economic situation of his own country rather than trying to rebuild the Soviet Empire by force we’d all be better off and he might even achieve what he wants through diplomatic means/financial incentives.
