This thread has lost direction.
I'm personally appalled by the the Russian action, the directive of a mad man and that his countrymen have allowed it to happen.
however I wonder if the old excuse for violence "they have the right to protect themselves" has ever been used on here.

I'm going out for breakfast this morning, mate. I wonder if you could phone up your pal Vlad and ask him, if he's determined to launch a nuclear attack, whether he could time it for around 11.30. That way, I'll have had time to enjoy my brekkie and a 2nd cup of coffee, but won't yet have had to pay for it. Think of it as a triumph for the workers over the capitalist cafe owners if it helps. Ta.
If its a small family community coffee shop enjoy. If its starbucks ill order the nukes to target each one this instance. It'll be over kill and you'll be subjected with thoasands of nukes but ill be saving you from coffee that tastes like cats urine. You'll thank me one day.

Half the planet decided they didn't want the UK to police the world , in recent history .
I agree with them.
I get the argument for intervention, and it will carry on.
you have the keep Britain great side, want us to be a world power.
then the opposition Liberal side that says it hates that view,
but is up in arms and want intervention when the situation around the world hits there screens.
Then its we can't stand by and watch it happen and both sides end up with ironically the same outcome
send are troops in.
This is why I'm not at all confident we won't end up in a full blown war with Russia. Public opinion is shaping in that direction. I just don't think people will stand for "just" sanctions that completely destroy the Russian economy and make their poorest poorer. I also don't think they realise the real consequences of sending the troops in...

I think the idea this would be a defensive war is up for debate - just because we're told Putin is mad doesn't mean Russian soldiers will be on our shores at any point, but I think the media portrayal of him as Hitler makes people feel personally threatened and feel like the only option to stop him taking over the world is go to war.

We need cooler heads to prevail the next few days or we could end up in a situation we can't back down from.

I think I preferred covid as a crisis...

What if the small family community coffee shop sells bad coffee? Just a light shelling?
