Current Affairs Ukraine

I see @Death is back at his adolescent hot takes (..."guys, did you know some media sources less good than others?? OMG, just crazy...do you even know where your news is coming from...like, wake up people!!!"...) ,and painful-to-watch attention-seeking whataboutery (..."come on GOT, don't you remember that the USA once stole parts of Texas from Mexico...what's a matter with you??!!"...).

Do you even consider that other people have also read 5th grade history books as thoroughly as you did. And many of them have continued to even read beyond this level.

Look, @Death, you did this in the Trump and Biden threads about 3 years ago. It's tired and dumb and obvious. How do I know this? Because when your message is "...OMG folks, some media is biased..." and "...but, but, but other countries also bad..." it pretty much applies to every thread in the current affairs. Just give it a break. Maybe try reading a book on this particular topic or maybe, for this thread, just do what I do: if you don't know much about the geopolitics of this particular conflict, its history, and the immediate political strategies involved, then just don't post stuff that tries to make you look smart. Or just stick to cats. Simple. Because what you think you are doing is very differently perceived from how you perceive it.

A lot of this going here:

I wouldn’t have anything to do with any of it personally.
Long held the view the UK should be like Japan and just have an army for defence.
Although I would differ as I would have it a lot stronger than it is today.
We don't get thanked in the long run for poking are noses in anyway so why bother.
The working class gain nothing and it's and sons and daughter's that do the fighting and get killed.
Then come back to what , minimum wage jobs or life on the street's for many.
Unfortunately I am never likely to see my view taken up.
100%

The argument for fighting on foreign soil is that it keeps us safer. Eg (and purely academic argument) isis allowed to grow and become a major force across Middle East, there success could spread across the world and Europe… would be more difficult to overthrow once established if attacks at home increased.

Somalia is just a small iota. And Russia have bombed terrorists in Syria. And everyone is up in arms about that.

Call me edgey. I have had this opinion for decades.

''We know america nad NATO are war criminals emperialists infiltrating countries around the globe causing mayhem, ever expanding with with its fake democracy dictated by capitalism...... BUT WHAT HAS THIS GOT TO DO WITH IT STOP BEINGG EDGEY''

The fact you are addressing it saying you know it already only worries me.

And its is very relevant.

And to reiterate I think Russia needs to be toppled also. But priorities.
Agree 100%.

Us and NATO are just as bad if not worse.

Can’t say that on here though.

Half the planet decided they didn't want the UK to police the world , in recent history .
I agree with them.
I get the argument for intervention, and it will carry on.
you have the keep Britain great side, want us to be a world power.
then the opposition Liberal side that says it hates that view,
but is up in arms and want intervention when the situation around the world hits there screens.
Then its we can't stand by and watch it happen and both sides end up with ironically the same outcome
send are troops in.

How messed up is it that wanting America government to be toppled and tried for war crimes along with Blair is edgey. How much does the BBC, CNN, Channel 4 etc have such a spell on western citizens that what I am saying is apparently edgey and against the grain.

It should be completely reasonable, normal and humane to address this.
I'm going out for breakfast this morning, mate. I wonder if you could phone up your pal Vlad and ask him, if he's determined to launch a nuclear attack, whether he could time it for around 11.30. That way, I'll have had time to enjoy my brekkie and a 2nd cup of coffee, but won't yet have had to pay for it. Think of it as a triumph for the workers over the capitalist cafe owners if it helps. Ta.

Why not create a thread discussing the problems with NATO and western foreign policy rather than gum up this one.

I am no fan of NATO by a long stretch. But right now the problem is Russia has invaded Ukraine.
Edgy freaks thats why pal. Should be thread banned. This is not different to the way davek was and he was punished.

Instead of comparing with US its better to compare with banks/companies the same size.

Cant compare US banks with Russian or their subsidiaries.
Seeing how we only have one data point for the collapse of a financial institution that nearly took the entire post-WWII banking system down with it, I don't see another point of comparison with respect to the concept of "too big to fail" in global terms.

If you want to talk bank failures prior to modern central banking separate from in here, I'm game but I'm a little rusty. It's been a couple of decades since I did the coursework on that stuff. I know a decent amount about American history on the subject, but next to nothing about the subject with respect to European history. I'd be interested to hear the differences in the experience, as that information is probably relevant to the issues a soon-to-be-closed banking system like Russia's will be facing.
