Probably because most people don't really give a toss as long as they are OK and have better things than someone else.

The scumbags in charge don't even bother to lie to the public any more.
I'm hopeful it's more of a structural issue rather than a moral issue with the British identity.

I know there are European countries where, in order to be a cabinet member for transport, your higher education must be related to that specialisation, thus offering a degree of competence within the field.
That would prevent the likes of Gove and Shapps being shoehorned into any old role, as a favour for supporting the incumbent leader.
Here in France, most of those who I've met who go to the top grande école, Sciences Po (Paris), all have aspirations for working in government, whereas friends who've gone to Oxbridge or LSE/UCL don't seem to have that same motivation.
