A level-headed and rational person would, but we're talking here about an autocratic leader who is under a lot of pressure. Historically, that's not a good mix.

I may be wrong (I hope I'm not) although I have an inkling that he'll want someone who is loyal, will not be a threat to him and an effective military leader...

...in that order. How many of those do you get? A general with the loyalty of the army is a dangerous thing to a dictator.
It is, until he decides to fly his own plane to Scotland to talk to a duke and then to Churchill so that he can help end the war.

As I said earlier in the thread, generally the Russians start out with politically reliable doofuses in charge. They then churn and burn commanders until they get to the competent ones. They use them to win the war, then figure out how to keep them from overthrowing the crown afterwards.

Inappropriate Language
A Ukrainian-owned bakery and espresso shop here in San Antonio is donating all proceeds from this weekend to efforts in support of their homeland. They are known for their cheesecakes. The outpouring of support has been tremendous to see. I arrived this morning 30 minutes before opening and was nearly 100 people deep in the queue. 30 minutes later the line was more than a city block long. After making my purchases, I saw the line was even longer. People were calling in and donating money to buy the personal cheesecakes and slices for people standing in line. The cash donation jar was already nearly overflowing.

Doing what we can here to tell Putin to go [Poor language removed] himself.

Here's a sample of the personal cheesecakes in a jar, from L to R: Red Velvet, Cookies and Cream, and my favorite Toffee Turtle.

A failure would really be them being booted out completely, I would think.
Success or failure can only be judged against the political aims of such an 'intervention'. Given the crux of the matter was successive waves of NATO (US) expansion, he opted to abandon deterrence in favour of compellence.

They've failed in the sense they've united all Western forces, amongst whom they've spent the last decade sowing seeds of discontent and chaos; they've pushed Finland and Sweden into the arms of NATO; they've now awoken the German war machine; they've highlighted the existential necessity for the EU to become (officially) politically and militarily active in order to remain remotely relevant long-term.

All of this whilst crippling themselves financially for a country with history of facing Russian aggression, where counter-insurgencies will be commonplace as they fight against the drawing of the iron curtain once again.

What a fantastic gesture, from the shop as well as the good folk of San Antonio.
