Gorbachev opened the Soviet up before the fall of the wall as communism was failing and this was taken advantage of by the original oligarchs.

Organised crime was rife well before the change in Russia. Once Yeltsin got into power it was out of control and he had to sell the country off to the oligarchs to stay in power.

The oligarchs were the ones who put Putin into power as he protected them and the billions they stole from the country. He completed his power grab when he told the oligarchs to stay in line, or face his wrath.

There was plenty of gangsters in the Soviet Union, organised crime is not a consequence of capitalism.

Russiaan imperial ambitions pre-date 'the west' as well.

Putin and regime is comfortable with mafia/gangsters (corruption) running alongside his flavour of capitalist state, no doubt because its mutually profitable but make no mistake Putin is the power behind all corruption in Russia. Something that went unchecked for far too long from us in the west.

We can agree the west certainly enabled what happened in Russia in the 80's, but to say organised crime barely existed is ridiculous.

As I say, read about Putin in Dresden, the vaults of money the communist party hid from the public, the killings on factory floors, the stasi, the KGB.

It was rife and helped build the platform for the criminal state Russia became in the 90's.

Dont believe it would be wise to make that assumption which was basically a "closed state". They basically legalese corruption at a whim. Much like our VIP lanes for dodgy PPE in pandemic. With USSR by the 80s it was crony state profit from corruption would have be rife if well connected.

I’m not wasting my time as I’ve tried explaining to people here before only to be told it’s not evidence etc

Would be helpful to see this in a spectrum rather than right wrong black and white. Its useful to suggest people should not go balls deep into Zelenksyy narrative this also applies to Putin.
