Brb, just adding "NATO/USA are completely incapable of challenging Russia" to @Kev The Rat's best hits:

My Hungarian mate does not disagree. He would counter "large section" though. He also thinks they are fools. And anyrate, why not just ask, have a vote, or move there?

There are a number of the Hungarian population, mainly elderly, who yearn for the "protection" of the old Soviet era, a bit like Gammon Brexiteers here. A false past, a fear for a country they no longer know, (Black people reading the news for example), but your hero decides to impose his will on the innocents.

I couldnt live with that narrative in my head. Fair play if you have that level of unconcern for fellow human beings.

The Hungarians you speak of have no blood ties to the socialist system.

This is a completely different issue to political ideals.

What we have is - as in a lot of the former Soviet states, but more extreme in Ukraines case - is a large section of Russian people who have been left with their national identity completely disregarded

The young ones? Like my mate? Sure, they dont. So thanks for agreeing with me that some of the elderly population yearn for the soviet/communist era.

Any ex Soviet democracies have asked to be readmitted?

No but I don’t know the exact percentages of ethnic Russians in these ex soviet states compared to Ukraine

Belarus clearly will have a high level of ethnic Russians - and they are more or less in the Russian Federation anyway.

On the other hand there is a military alliance of other former states plus Russia called CSTO
