This effectively reverts Wagner to a light infantry / SOF role, one that probably suits them best.

The relocation to Belarus is interesting too. Recently Russia has or is planning to move tactical ballistic missiles with nuke warheads into Belarus (I think they’ve moved the launch platforms there already).

Given the unpopularity of Lukashenka and the rise of anti-govt forces in Belarus it would have been a concern for Moscow and it makes sense for Putin to “deploy” a force into Belarus with the skills and experience to deal with counter-insurgency and to break-up / dismantle any anti-govt forces there.

I don’t think this was ever a pre-planned grand scheme but rather a response and a solution to a number of Putin’s problems.

Also I don’t see a light infantry force (Wagner) posing a threat to Ukraine from the north, if they tried anything then they’d get whacked.

Putin says that the Wagner action was “high treason” was the result of certain “ambitions” that are underway.

“This is a criminal campaign. It is equivalent to armed mutiny, Russia will defend itself and repel this move. We are fighting for the life and security of our citizens and our territorial integrity. In the face of those who are fighting on the front, this is a stab in the back of the troops and the people of Russia.”

Wagner get a pardon and it was all just a misunderstanding.

But if you are a Russian citizen who dares to call the so called special military operation a war you get up to 15 years in jail.
