Another problem with massive artillery bombardments, is that there tends to be " mistakes made, which can cause massive collateral damage " as there`s so much that can wrong and affect the accuracy of the shelling - the weather, the wind, the skill or lack of it of the gunners., the quality of the shells etc.
Yeah - effectively they will lay waste to entire map grid squares knowing that they will hit their targets inside that grid but not giving a flying one about killing and destroying everything else.
The Antony Beevor fbook about the battle for Stalingrad in WW2, is a fantastic read, for the way it explain and brings the Russian tactics of the " meat grinder " to life.
It seems that Putin is using the same play book.
Stalingrad was won because they broke German flanks outside city and surrounded 6th army inside. Also it was meat grinder for both side, and not ridiculous Hollywood movie with supermen Germans overwhelmed by Asiatic hordes.
They fought one of the greatest, lethal and most evil army ever assembled at it peak, who had one goal, to exterminate, and not remains of the remains of the remains of that army.
Also Red Army, not Russian army, with much larger pool of recruits (Ukrainians, Belarusians, all the Central Asian states etc...), that could afford such losses, Russia alone can't, especially now.

They need help, decisive help, and not little by little that is coming every few months.

The Bradley’s are half way across the Atlantic - will be in Southampton 7th Feb and in Ukraine by the 12th.
The Marders are already in Ukraine. These IFV’s are what will make a big difference to the defence of Ukraine. The tanks we all know won’t be in country until April at the earliest so they have to plan to fight the Russians without them for now.
Russia will take ground during the upcoming offensive - but hopefully the Ukes can hurt them enough to br able to launch a summer counter offensive with their new shiny tanks and CV90’s.
Anyway, apparently Germany approved sending 88 of older Leopards 1 (wonder are they trolling Russians with symbolic meaning of that number).

TBF calling Stalingrad a "meat grinder" is to ignore the brilliance of the counter-offensive that the Red Army carried out that resulted in 6th Army being surrounded and then reduced. That is not to say the defenders of the city weren't beyond the normal definition of heroic, but what went on outside was more important in the final outcome.
Also you can make the argument that it is the Ukrainians who are playing the role of the Red Army at Stalingrad here - the Russians are after all the invading army that is slowly advancing through defences at significant cost, whilst their opponents are the ones who are fighting for every inch of their homeland. If the rumoured Russian offensive doesn't exist or doesn't work, there are going to be a lot of very tired Russian forces left in a very vulnerable position in the Donbas up against a lot of fresh, rearmed and reequipped Ukrainian units.
OFC though I still pray for some form of sanity to return to this horror show, and proper negotiations take place between the participants.
They’re Leopard 1A5s, which were the last to receive modifications. This means they'll have an LRF fitter, improved optics (thermal, magnification) and an FCS.
While they're not going to match the standard of third-generation MBTs, Russia would be fool hardy to dismiss them, and more so with the ancient stock they have.
If a Russian grunt is sat in an early spec T-72 with little upgrades, he's not going to want to come up against the 105mm rounds they'll be lobbing at them.
Guess its gonna be useful as fire support to infantry and attacking fortified positions. Tank vs tank warfare is quite rare, even during ww2, despite like of Tigers, Panthers etc... being so mythologized
