I have a relation who was in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers who died on 1st July 1916. Buried in La Sucrerie cemetery.

He was probably part of the 48th Brigade, which was part of the 16th Irish Division. There's a lovely memorial at Messines if you haven't been before.

Problem for Russia when they win the ground war , which they will , is that with a population armed to the teeth, don't forget the reserves as well as the army have guns as well and anybody with a Ukrainian passport from today can have access to guns .
It's going to be a bloody price to stay there on the ground for any length of time.
Only have to see Afghanistan to see how that plays out, even for the mighty Russia.

Maybe I'm being naive, but I dont think they can hold the country if they take it over. To control a country you need to control all the major cities. And to do that, you need a massive amount of boots on the ground. They don't have enough numbers, and the Ukrainians are not going to accept it.

They have to hope the Ukraine surrenders , without going into those cities.
More than likely surrounding them with big numbers , getting what they want then retreating.
I suspect that it will just start a movement of terrorism within the Ukraine , Russia, and Belarus, there are over a million and a half Ukrainian people in Russia for instance.
Couple of hundred well trained people could cause a lot of problems , pipelines cut, car bombs ect. More than likely with covert training from the Western powers.
The Ukraine people are proud can't see them meekly just taking a hiding and letting it go.

They could back off and take the Eastern edge. Similar to what happened in Georgia. But it seems like they're in for the long haul this time.

I have not been there yet but my sister got there before Covid and left flowers. I can find a photo of his grave on Find a Grave. He is buried with two RDF comrades, one of whom was a Scot.

So poignant as he was only married a few months before.

Lots of Seaforth Highlanders died the same day and buried in that cemetery.

Just fearful that this will escalate and take many young innocent lives.

Slava Ukraine! Heroiam slava!??

Tonight we joined hundreds of Ukrainians to protest in Barcelona, won’t change anything but my wife needed to feel she was doing something, was good to get away from news channels for a bit, we sang, prayed and cursed Putin together and sent videos back home to family to show them they don’t stand alone, sadly it seems they do.

Tomorrow we will go again.
