So let’s just say that we’re in agreement that if they’re on the list for mobilisation then they are being persecuted in their own country and have a right to refugee status and should be treated as such.

Now given that our resident Russian @bluestevon has just said that anyone on the list would be stopped by Russian authorities from getting to a border crossing. Surely that means that any Russians who are not on the list and are trying to exit Russia are not being persecuted and therefore not eligible for refugee status?

Yup but a credible fear of persecution is grounds for asylum mate - all it requires is it to be a significant possibility of that

So not on the list, but a significant possibility you will be (say you are eligible on the reserve list but not called up yet) and arguing you'd refuse to go would then likely be grounds you'd face persecution.

Asylum, refugee law is an absolute quagmire btw, worked in a role where I saw some horrendous examples of at times how 'blind' it is to common sense.

Nah mate, not a citizen just a permanent resident so can't vote, serve in the forces or any governmental positions., wife's family is kinda insulated a lot from it too thankfully

Legally they don't really have a leg to stand on. It will be interesting to see what comes of the situation. The Baltic countries don't have a great record with refugees more widely and were pretty rubbish when it came to accepting Afghan refugees.

I think it's simply a precedent they don't want to set, when it comes to their own defense. Should Putin's gamble for resurrection succeed, he's going to end up with an economy on a wartime footing and a very large force under arms. I wouldn't want to be saying that my citizens can scarper for greener pastures if I draft them under those conditions, either.

Yeah, I do prefer the word of my Russian friend who is helping Russians leave Russia daily.

While its not a daily list, it does take time to call people up, unless you think they just sent out 1 million letters in 24 hours.
