First accounts of the Ukranian bridgeheads over the Oskil river near Kupyansk are starting to emerge. Looks like total carnage.

The Russians didn’t get a chance to dig in the line properly and had very little armour or artillery support. The results were devastating. They tried to run but were shredded by Uke artillery. The body count is likely to be very high.

That rifle was 20+ years old when WWI broke out. It was a relative antique by WWII standards.
I mean, it’s supposedly a very capable rifle, but I imagine not really practical for the modern battlefield. Someone with better knowledge of these things could say better than me.

Depends how widespread and accurate the pictures are, but between this and the rusted assault rifles posted yesterday, it looks pretty grim for the new batch of Russian recruits doesn’t it?
All the more surprising that Finland and Sweden had to join Nato in fear of their losing sovereignty while faced with such a Fred Karno threat

Makes for depressing reading for Ukrainian civilians.?

"In negotiations held in March 2022 in Istanbul, Ukraine appeared ready to accept Russia’s settlement and a negotiated settlement seemed possible. Then Kiev changed its mind and turned its back on the proposal. According to Dmitry Tremin, Research Professor at the Higher School of Economics and a member of the Russian International Affairs Council, "Moscow has always suspected that this U-turn, as on previous occasions, was the result of US behind-the-scenes influence, often aided by the British and other allies."

Moscow’s suspicion has now likely been solidified by three events. Right after the promising Istanbul meeting, then UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson rushed to Kiev to correct Zelensky, telling him that Putin "should be pressured, not negotiated with." He told Zelensky that, even if Ukraine was ready to sign some agreements with Russia, the West was not.” On August 24, in his dying days as prime minister, he repeated that call, saying that now was not the time to promote a "flimsy plan for negotiation" with Russia.

A frustrating month after the Istanbul meeting, in an April 21 interview, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Turkey did not think the war would last long after the talks. But it did, and Cavusoglu charged that "There are countries within NATO who want the war to continue." He said that “following the NATO foreign ministers’ meeting, it was the impression that…there are those within the NATO member states that want the war to continue, let the war continue and Russia get weaker.”

Cavusoglu’s insistence that a settlement was within reach seems to have been confirmed by a September Foreign Affairs article by Fiona Hill and Angela Stent. In the article, Hill and Stent say that "According to multiple former senior U.S. officials we spoke with, in April 2022, Russian and Ukrainian negotiators appeared to have tentatively agreed on the outlines of a negotiated interim settlement: Russia would withdraw to its position on February 23, when it controlled part of the Donbas region and all of Crimea, and in exchange, Ukraine would promise not to seek NATO membership and instead receive security guarantees from a number of countries."

How much do they commit to military spending? Do Sweden actually have any military requirements? Do Finland other than the potential for a skirmish with Russia?

Have they both signed up for a huge white elephant in reality?

Stated numerous times Russia invaded, stated numerous times I disagree with it profoundly, stated numerous times any war crime should be punished.

Can you not except that?
No,if you don't root for the Zelensky, US and Nato blindly then by default you are getting food parcels directly from the Kremlin. The Call of Duty boys have a simplistic world view.

Russian duality,Fred Karno on one hand and a mighty army poised to sweep through Western Europe at the same time. Some trick that.

I just find it weird as anything that the percieved view on here seems to be "Russians should take out Putin for sending their friends, husbands, brothers and kids to die' - should they put blame on him, yup damned right to do so.

But errrrm, slight thing here, the deaths are being inflicted by Ukranians using NATO weaponry, from troops trained by NATO, and using stategic planning, targetting and guidance provided by NATO.

Now remember the anger when the 'fake' story hit the media about Russian bounties paid on dead us soldiers in Afhganistan, now ask the question will the vast majority of Russians blame the person who started the war or will the blame be directed towards those helping the killing of Russians.

I'm not saying right or wrong, I'm saying ask that very pertinent question.
So take an imaginary example.

If your brother or friend served in Iraq and was killed by an Iraqi who was using a newly supplied Russian anti tank weapon, the person firing it had just returned from training in Moscow how to use it, and your real time location was supplied to him by a Russian military analyst, are you marching with a gun to downing street or Washington to remove Blair or Bush or are you now hating the Russians?
