Silly question, but, how do they aim so accurately? I know they are not a psych on the new stuff, but is it simply trajectory over distance type stuff?
It's not silly at all.

Gun laying takes training and practice to get right, but fortunately now the LCDU (Layers Control Display Unit) of our L118s does a lot of the calculations.

For indirect fire, it monitors many parameters such as distance, elevation, barrel and external temperature plus other climate stuff and the charge type.

When it's combined with the GPS, it means you can hit a target with real accuracy. Yet it's important to note that their guns appears to have neither the LCDU or INS.

So we're talking about doing all of the above using the sight, a compass and a range table to calculate bearings and elevation. A good crew can still hit the spot.

With the wonder of drones and their on-board GPS, it's much easier to find the range and bearing to put into the range table.

Now, that’s an answer!
Fascinating- thanks

Interesting take.

Indeed - I especially liked this bit at the end:

Consequently, the question remains: How exactly does the United States all at once avoid the resumption of a Verdun-like, endless bloodbath on the Ukrainian-Russian border, reject any negotiated settlement until Ukraine unambiguously wins the war and expels every Russian from all its territory, prevent a wounded Putin from using a tactical nuclear weapon—and circumvent a head-to-head showdown with Russia and its 7,000 nukes?

In sum, the problem that plagues these assumed, multifaceted Western agendas is that, so far, they in toto appear mutually exclusive.

This is one of the biggest problems with the response to this invasion - we should be encouraging negotiations, and lifting of sanctions should absolutely be on the cards in those negotiations. This war needs to end as soon as possible.

Both good reads. Basically what were are getting from reports in my neck of the woods. This counterattack has caught everyone by surprise especially by the intellectual constabulary of Military talking heads both current and retired. Everyone went from a quick Russian victory to a quagmire stalemate now to embarrassing solution for Russia. I'm not sure the word "Pariah" state was really believed at first. But with the Armenian situation sparking another problem for Putin as he won't survive very much longer. Watch for internal shocks to the system from his own populace and it will be game over.

Going back to this article, the inference about what would happen to their nukes if there was such a situation is a major concern.

Sanctions remain until putin goes, minimum requirement.
