China's 'Belt and Road' initiative is worth reading into in detail as it has the potential to has provided a strong economic sway over lots of countries.

The positive is they're providing a lot of investment in developing economies, yet the potential for debt-leverage and neocolonialism are genuine concerns.

Emphasis on the potential as we'll likely only see the impact within the next decade or beyond. I'm sure China will be offering to help finance Ukraine's rebirth.

Belt and Road could, if engaged with properly, be of great benefit for the world. Having all the manufacturing at one end wouldn't be good though.

President Xi is doing this for China only

He is - but it is coming from their money at the moment and as I said, it has to be engaged with properly.

For example, having manufacturing spread capacity along the whole length of the network is going to be much more secure and efficient, avoiding bottlenecks, shortages and local issues (like with lockdowns, or natural disasters) affecting everyone else. They'll never propose that but it would be in everyones (including their) interest to have it set up like that, but to do that requires genuine and effective engagement with the idea.

I'm going to say, because both sides think they can come out of it better by prolonging the conflict.
With more civilian deaths the outcome. When even US military strategists are saying it'll be a stalemate maybe they should start trying to bring both sides to the negotiation table.

Perhaps the US military strategists see a prolonged stalemate as desirable.

I'd imagine they do,the sky high prices of oil and gas will benefit the US post Covid economic recovery no end. And the lease loan of arms to the Ukraine, the cherry on the cake.

In an ideal world... yes, but ultimately it will involve exploitation and natural resource grabs etc.

It seems Putin badly misjudged the situation. He cannot win as there is no way that Ukraine would surrender or seemingly accept losing land, at this point. The damage and depletion of Russian forces and military equipment coupled with the economic damage that hasn't started yet will be the undoing of him. If they are relying of China that will come with long term consequences.

Spot on, China are planning for world domination, currently through economic measures but tech too. At some point this will probably escalate to miltary measures, probaly starting with Taiwan. The west took the collective eye off the ball but are all waking up to a very real threat.

Yeh, their down fall could be spreading themselves too thin. They are involved all over Africa, Asia and S America, if these countries decided they had had enough, how would China enforce their debts?
The military issue with China is terrifying and very much on the cards. Another of Trumps masterminds to take America out of the "world police" roll and let China (and Russia) establish themselves so deep.

This is the crux of it. We will see what we will see. It looks like no one directly involved comes out of this ahead though.

Aye, the emphasis on the could (the potential I mentioned) and why I said we need to see how it pans out.

There's some positive examples of how the initiate has supported commerce, transportation and diplomatic ties, with complex infrastructure put in place.

On the other hand, there's also a few horror stories of how countries have been coerced into costly projects, which have shackled their economies with debt.

Look at the likes of Bagamoyo for evidence of how the financing conditions enforced by China were almost suicidal for the local government.

What's worse is that some of the ports they've financed are, by the nature of the contract, strictly operated and managed by Chinese state-led businesses.

If you don't deal with them on their terms, they're more than willing to pull the plug or limit trade as evidenced in some cases on the East-Coast of Africa.

When you're shackled with restrictive debt, most play ball. A few of the ports they've built have contractual obligations to allow Chinese naval ships to dock too.

Based on all the above, it's easy to be be very cynical about China's desires, but as I said earlier let's see. For some countries, it's been a big help!
