There is as always another side to every story. Could the US/Nato have had a hand in this? By leaving an open invitation to the Ukraine to join up thus setting up the scenario of Nato nuclear missiles being sited on the Russian border. The US have previous with this in a situation that triggered the Cuban Crisis. Ask yourself what would be the American reaction if Mexico signed a military pact that included Russian bases sited in Ciudad Juárez? They have already threatened military intervention if the Solomon Islands allow China to build a military base there.?

One thing is interesting,the loss of generals in combat. Doubt a Nato general would suffer more than a bad case of haemorrhoids from too much time sitting at a desk thousands of kilometres behind the lines.

If Putin had not invaded the Ukraine there would be no atrocities. no war crimes, and no civilian deaths. Simple as.

Invasion and regime change rarely ends well. Maybe Putin should have looked at the US playbook.
