Something has changed in between this season and last and it isn't tactical (the fact it is being played slowed is because the players have stopped taking risks) and whilst I don't think it is entirely financial, some of the more established players who are used to getting one year extensions may look and Eto'o and Barry coming in on cushy long term deals and start to feel a bit irked
He did try and shore up the old guard though with contracts: Hibbert, Osman...and brought Ferguson into the first team fold.

He's tried to be diplomatic and its a case of 'cap in hand gets kick in teeth'. If it'd have been me I'd have got to the summer in the position of strength he had as manager after that last campaign and told Distin, Osman, Hibbert to get the **** out of the club. 'Thanks for your services lads. Adios'. And there's absolutely no way he should have offered someone like Ferguson a coaching role. That was just folly. I'd have had him out the door so fast his head would have spun.

He's been very naive Roberto.

I dont know, there's always been a gradation of wages. High earners have always existed side by side with those "less well paid".

I seriously doubt this is down to finances.

Moyes had a policy of upping the wages to keep players at Goodison. The high earners were the established players Arteta, Cahill and a few others there was always a ceiling and they would get to it with the others on lower wages until they showed their worth e.g Jags, Baines and others before. That way Moyes kept the older players on board. Never underestimate the pulling power of money. Roy Vernon absolutely detested Fred Pickering because when he came from Blackburn, he was on more than Vernon who was banging in the goals. Vernon would play the ball just enough in front of Pickering so he couldn't reach it and made him look like a right slow carthorse.

Wasn't Ashley Cole, Lampard and Terry initially peed off because of the money they were offered. Gerrard was chinned by Carragher at the 2004 Euros because he kept going on about how he was going to earn £100 000 perweek to leave LFC for Chelsea. Money talks and 'egos' get affected by their money value.

I'm not a massive fan of Martinez' style, but I can't deny that having no proper left midfielder, only one truly decent central midfielder, and only one decent centre half is something that would have a massively adverse impact upon any team.

I'd have a lot more confidence about staying in the Premier League, if we bought a left midfielder, replaced Barry, and bought a competent centre half!

Oh yeah, you can have a terracing of wages along those 'meritocratic lines. That's not being questioned. I just doubt that players used to that system - and with the extra tv cash coming in now - would bridle at a newcomer coming in like Eto'o and getting top dollar straight away.

They know and accept how the market works.

Apparantly he can lay the law down on the footy stuff. I'm wondering though whether he's political enough to survive at a club like this.

It's just my opinion, but (unlike Moyes who pressed too soon at United with the old guard) Martinez had got into an exceptionally powerful position this summer that he squandered. He had the fanbase 100% behind him and could have done anything he wanted on the playing side. The players too knew he'd done the business and would have got into line.

If it'd have been me I'd have been like friggin Nero! No **** opposing me would have survived.

That i agree with he has let it fester and grow.
He should have stamped on the first player who questioned him and shown he was in charge

A month ago there would have been outrage at selling any players in the upcoming window, squad needed for the EL, etc.

Now apparently half the team at least should be shown the door.

Kneejerking ? You couldn't make it up.
