Don't get how anyone would be against the idea of giving EU nationals the vote or to 16/17 year olds really

I definitely would not support 16 year olds getting a vote. They aren't adults in law for a start. I was interested in history/politics at school and would say I was relatively well informed, but there is no way I was ready to vote at 16. I'm barely ready to vote now ten years later.

I'd genuinely increase it to 21 before lowering it to 16. 18 is perfectly fine imo.

Interesting fact (I think)....

No one born since 84 has voted in an election where Chelsea weren't top of the league, or had just been crowned champions.

I'd be ok if somehow it transpired in 6 weeks that history had repeated itself.

It's funny really, my stepson is that age and is more clued on politically than most adults are. I know I was at that age. If you can pay tax you should be able to vote in my view.

Officially it would be hard to get them onto the ballot papers. In reality the Tories know that they have very little support from this grouping and it would further damage their opportunities, hence why they oppose it. I think we can safely assume the same is true amongst EU nationals!

But why does the adults in law thing matter really? Pay tax on their wages, they should get to vote. What do you know now that means you can vote that you didn't know then? And is it the same for the entire populace?

Oh yeah, I know they'd never do it but it's for no reason other than self interest.

I think we should lower the election age to 55.

Otherwise Joey can vote.

I know you're sort of joking but I actually think there should be a ceiling to it.

I also thinking the voting age should be raised to 21.

Reasoning for both is mental faculty - loads aren't fully matured at 18 and loads are mentally gone at 70.

On a side note, I don't know of many 16 year olds who earn enough to pay tax. Most are in part time work and I remember earning about 3 quid an hour!!

Supporting any change to the franchise is just another way of avoiding an election. We can't physically register millions of new voters and have a pre Christmas election. It will take about 6 months.

Wouldn't surprise me if this has been the plan all along.

It could be done. All it is is giving 16 year olds the right to vote; it's up to them to register.

I just don't think it should be done. This should be something fully debated and amended for months in parliament, not done at the last minute.

It won't pass anyway.
