Mate, 4 in every 10 football fans disapprove of this gesture. It's being booed before every game by thousands. What more proof do you need that this is causing division???

The difference is, we think the division is being caused by the knobheads who take umbrage with a 5 second knee, you think it's being caused by black players who chose the gesture and support marxism all of a sudden

Try it then. What's to lose? If what you say happens, then nothing has changed except the gesture.

If what you say doesn't happen, as I believe, then you have an effective gesture that will be attacked purely by those who will show themselves up when they do.
Tubey, I think you have reached a “two ears, one mouth” moment. Time to stop talking and start listening. I think you may find that the English team taking the knee is resonating with the public. Boris has just lied about it to Parliament and no doubt we will have PritI Patel on explaining how her remarks were taken out of context. I think you may have understood the importance of gestures.

Did he?

What did he say?

I heard him say they never supported booing the England team and are committed to practical measures to combat racism.

Where was the lie? Admittedly I tuned in a bit late.

And my word, I do not misunderstand the importance of gestures - that's my entire point; how important it is when gestures don't work is as important as when they do.

86% of the country is White British.

10% of parliament is of an ethnic minority, meaning it's actually near enough broadly in line with population demographics. But still, obviously, a minority.

Debate speaker selection is random. It's a "name in the hat" kind of thing. So, logically, if 90% of the Commons is not an ethnic minority, the odds are high that they won't be selected in a 'lucky dip'.

Or the TLDR version - that tweet isn't a story, beyond perhaps suggesting that white MPs should have no opinion on the subject matter and shouldn't have put their names forward to speak on it.

I think we are fully aware you believe white people should have opinions.

Not great that you went for 'ethnic minority' as one when Black MPs was actually mentioned.

Speaker selection isn’t random, it’s a mix of seniority (ex PMs and ex Cabinet ministers will usually speak before backbenchers), known expertise on a subject (eg: select committee members on that topic) and whether they catch the eye of the speaker.

I’d hope that if a black MP was going to speak on this issue, especially if he or she had seniority (Lammy being the one that springs immediately to mind), that they’d be one of the first to speak.

It is a story if the government is serious in its sound bites. The antiquated rules of the House of Commons, like the whole of the structure and day to day running of government needs seriously updating for the 21st century - but I won't hold my breath.

The government doesn't select debate participants.
