If you want to get away with a murder, you get an illegal gun, and usually one that doesn't make a lot of noise (handgun + silencer); which is probably easier to do in the USA than in other countries since there are more of them around (though I have no knowledge of this).

If you are psychotic and you don't care about culpability, you order an assault rifle online or you go to a local gun shop and buy one to murder many.

Both acts are heinous, but one is probably more preventable than the other.

It seems like we could at least restart the discussion (again) on banning easily-modified semi-automatic rifles. But all legal routes to liability are generally blocked by the NRA, including going after ammo manufactures, taxing semi-auto assault rifle ownership to great extremes, suing semi-auto assault rifle manufacturers, better enforcement/banning modification of semi-autos, higher penalities for owning automatics, etc. And I seem to recall reading that even most 2nd Ammendment-supporting Americans are in favor of more gun control--the exact opposite of what the NRA wants, since their motives are profit-driven by manufacturers and not by their membership.
You know silencers in real life aren't like in the movies?

Well that's a clear violation of my 2nd amendment rights, so some unsuspecting manager in CT is gonna get an angry letter from me. I should be able--as a constitutional right--to pick up mayonaise, socks, motor oil, Funyuns, beer and an AK-47 all at once.

...and at discount prices......

The problem with the US is not so much the right to own a gun, it's the desire to own a gun. How many people in civilised countries have that same desire to own a gun? I'm sure the desire is high in places like Somalia, El Salvador etc, but civilised countries - no, the desire just isn't there.
Also, the US is not known for taking the moral high ground and standing down, they appear to be almost programmed to fight, whether it is for God, country or their sadly outdated constitution. And when a nation is programmed to fight, and you allow them to have as many guns as they like, sadly there is only ever going to be one outcome.

I don't think the USA will ever stop people from owning guns unfortunately. It's a culture over there, it's a bit of a vicious circle though because 99% of them will own a gun only for self defense, to prevent other with sinister intentions of using it against them. But, by owing a guy they could end up where it's used against them or, someone else in the family could get access to it.

I don't think they'll take lectures from us about the problems it brings when we have a knife crime problem. That's the counter-argument I hear quite a lot when having these debates.

Has anyone watched that guy Ben Sharipo's (Think thats how it's spelt) interview with Piers Morgan about the use of fire arms in America? Piers was absolutely destroyed.

It's a really crappy world we live in isn't it? Every day there's a shooting somewhere. I fear it's only going to get worse before it gets better. The truth is, if bad people want to hurt someone they'll find a way to do it, regardless of how many barriers we put out in front of them.
