Our job today: mourn the losses of ~60+ lives in Las Vegas after our worst ever mass shooting.
Our job tomorrow: understand the role that lack of background checks and mental health screenings to own a fully automatic weapon played in all of this.

The shooting at UT-Austin from the Bell Tower in 1966 is a tragic case of mental illness and mass murder. Charles Whitman actually wrote a suicide note saying he wasn't really sure why he had the irrational thoughts (those leading to cause him to murder people) and that he actually wanted an autopsy to determine if his brain was damaged.

Turns out he had a brain tumor that could have contributed to his actions.

"If they were illegal people would just get them anyway". Can America get rid of guns overnight? Of course not.

But it's much harder to obtain an illegal firearm in the UK than the US. Because the less guns to be produced for sale legally, the tougher it would be go to get hold of one otherwise. It's that simple.

Older wealthy guy in a relationship, no military background or mental health issues and as far as family knew no particular interest in guns or politcs and yet amassed a vertiable arsenal. The psych profile on this guy is going to be fascinating.

Explosives. Wonder where he got those from? Maybe banning explosives, or materials to make explosives would of prevented him from having any.

Ok listen mate,

Do you think this knobhead, Stephen Paddock just woke up yesterday, looked in his gun cabinet and decided today was the day he would check into the Mandalay bay and kill multiple people at a concert?

These acts are planned in advance. Or are you saying he just happened to take multiple rifles to a hotel for no reason, and that it was just a coincidence a concert was taking place yards away.

With it planned in advance, I would imagine obtaining an illegal firearm would be part of the planning ( if firearms were banned).

Again, banning firearms won't stop the crazed nutcase who wants to do harm.

Genuinely boggles me that you can think that banning firearms won't help. If it needs spelling out - no one who wants to stop the availability of guns thinks that it means no one can get hold of guns. People do think that stopping the public getting hold of guns legally will stop them from getting hold of them easily.
People die because it is so easy to access guns. People, like you, who keep suggesting gun ownership should be easy and legal are part of the reason people die.

In thinking more about this, I am actually starting to wonder if his profile is simliar to Whitman's...an otherwise normal individual who was driven to irrational thoughts via an ever-growing brain tumor (pure speculation, I know...but).

At no point have i suggested gun ownership should be easy and legal.

No mate, they already tried it in Venezuela and it didn't work. How could Washington succeed where Caracas failed?

We'll have to see what explosives they are, iirc grenades are legal in some states for instance.

As I mentioned above this guy's profile on current info is odd, it is possible that there is little that could have been done to stop this particular guy killing some number of people, he certainly seems to have had the free time and resources to invest in the capability.

But you assert that is the situation in all cases which I'd disagree with.
