The 2 years since Martinez left.

Other clubs romanticise them winning titles, we romanticise us bottling the chance to finish 4th. It's the maddest of tings.
Good point drawing in games like Norwich, Cardiff, West Brom, Stoke, Palace, Spurs. The defeat to Sunderland at home was probably the worst defeat. I know people it's all ifs and buts, I just think realistically we did have a good chance of finishing in the top 4,

Admittedly Martinez brought some turd, but we didn't spend big money on most his signings. I don't think we expected that much from a lot them.

Koeman and Walsh though...
I think you're quite right I think most people including myself weren't that pleased when he was appointed, however he won me over in his first season. We had an awful summer in 2014, we didn't seem ready for the start of the season. But I still I remember being in Croatia in 2014, feeling proud of our achievements the previous season, nowadays you just try and forget the season, because it's been mostly garbage. Making Ashley Barnes an alehouse player if ever there was one look like Suarez was truly disgraceful. We have just bought in a load of rubbish, failing to get a striker in and having to rely on a player who didn't even have a locker to get you out of trouble is truly unforgivable. That's why fans like Niasse because he actually tries.

We could easily start a thread titled “The two years before Martinez left” and the outlook was just as terrible. 3 of the last 4 seasons have been awful. Last season was ok...

You can’t give Martinez credit for his 72 point year and not also give him blame for back to back 47 point seasons. One season like that, the worst point total in two decades, is one thing, but to do it twice is special. People complain about how bad this year is, yet Sam and Koeman are going to likely surpass 47 points. Think about that.

I adored Martinez’s first season, the best I have felt about Everton for years. I liked his attacking “philosophy”, I saw a rational in his recruitment strategy and his promotion of young players.

In his second season we started out poorly in the league but that was compensated by doing well in our Europa group so I understood his switch in focus to the competition although it ended badly.

Even in the third year we had some upsides, especially the cup runs, but he clearly was losing the belief of both fans and players - fitness was questionable and defensive drills/planning appeared non-existent.

I still like Martinez, I think his recruitment record (despite some obvious flaws) was better than average and believe he was a decent choice to succeed Moyes. However Roberto staying after that poor third year would have been bad for both us and his own career.

Things were looking up in that first season but it was all downhill from there.
His lack of defensive nous, persistence with Alcaraz and Howard and the absolute drivel he spouted in his post match interviews were what did my head in.
For a physiotherapist as manager the players were remarkably unfit most of the time, discipline and camaraderie within the squad disappeared and we haven't changed since then.
We still look like the Everton of his last two seasons but at least we have an owner with the financial clout to turn things around.... come on Mosh get your hand in your pocket again.

In other historic questions would it have been better for us if Harald Hardrada had defeated Harold Godwinson at the Battle of Stamford bridge in 1066?

(Well it's got to be more interesting than another Martinez thread ,)
Probably - Harold G's army was knackered after marching to to york, fighting the battle and then marching back...also after the battle he dismissed some of the recruits he gathered on the way up, thinking it was job and finish.
Harold H on the otherhand could slowly regroup on the way down to meet William.
If he would've fell for Williams ploy of 'pretend to run away then turn and counter attack' like some of Godwinson's army did, well we'll never know.
