The Long Dark - Thirty Years of Hurt

Woolverhampton_Blue

Player Valuation: £35m
Since Everton’s last cup win in 1995 - almost 31 years ago - they have managed one solitary cup final appearance (2009) - now almost 17 years ago.

During that period, there have been only six semifinal appearances (three FA Cup and three League Cup).

Clubs that have won a European or domestic trophy in those 31 years include Blackburn, Leicester, Portsmouth, Wigan, Middlesbrough, Birmingham, Swansea, Newcastle, and Crystal Palace. As of this evening, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace are both 45 minutes away from European finals.

We are one of only six clubs (soon to be five) who have been ever-present since the Premier League began, benefiting from the vast flow of money that came with it.

How on earth have we managed to be so unsuccessful, so unlucky, for so long? The current ownership desperately needs to put together a blueprint for how we break our duck, and finally end the longest trophy drought in our 148 year history.

Because we're crap mate, simply that.

Bit of a synch, must be something in the ether, as I was struck by just this thought earlier - had the old Skinner & Baddiel number stuck in my head..

On a positive note, the Friedkins did deliver some success fairly quickly in Rome, so here's hoping they manage something similar with us.

Blackburn, Leicester, Portsmouth, Wigan, Middlesbrough, Birmingham, and Swansea are playing in the lower leagues. Wigan are in League One and will be joined by Leicester next season. Personally, I don't envy these clubs. We get ourselves the stability needed, then bring in the right manager and players to move forward and win the odd cup here and there.

Two words. "Bill" and "Kenwright."

Everything else leads back to Bill.
