The Long Dark - Thirty Years of Hurt

His legacy is the total elimination of standards at the club, relegation from the elite and our former peer group, and the destruction of any self-esteem among swathes of a broken, fearful, risk-averse fanbase.
The amount of times we could have been the next Sheffield Wednesday or Blackburn whilst he had any connection to the club is frankly disturbing.

What a cheery bunch..

Hopefully we’ll get a points deduction asap and than we can really get moaning..

Please remember that NOBODY on this forum can actually influence anything on pitch and doesn’t actually know anything about the business side of running a premier league football team

Reminds me of this from a few years ago

Additionally, we shouldn't confuse that FA Cup final win with us being a good or successful club at the time. We were crap, went into it as underdogs and largely had Nev to thank for us winning it.

We've been crap since 1988, so that's coming up to 40 years—4 decades—of being a crap and irrelevant football club. Certainly longer than a majority of people on this forum have been alive for.

We absolutely should have been relegated at least twice in that time, with extremely good fortune and the fans saving us.

Even the times we got back into Europe we largely embarrassed ourselves where much smaller clubs have excelled.

5-1 defeat to Dynamo Bucharest
5-2 defeat to Dynamo Kiev
5-1 defeat at home to Atalanta

A smattering of good results against certain clubs, that ultimately counted for nothing in between those humiliations.

Tbf it's no wonder Liverpool fans hit us with the 'small club' stick.

The day he passed I felt two things:

1. Sadness for his family at losing what appeared to be a genuinely good and nice husband and father.

2. Delight at a self-serving, fake Evertonian finally being removed from our club about two decades too late.

It was always clear he wasn't going up live of his free will. His death confirmed that.

Under Kenright, we were top half in 11 out of his 16 seasons. Under Moshiri, we were top half in 3 of his 9 seasons. What's more, under Kenright, we beat Moshiri's best season (7th) 6 times.

Heck, under Peter Johnson, we might have won the cup, but we "averaged" 14th in the league. So, before and after the Kenright era, we had a lot of expenditure with very worse results on the pitch than during the parsimonious times under Kenright.

Just a bit of perspective.

I'd argue that Johnson was the most damaging owner. When he took over, we were still part of the big five, but by the time he shuffled off, the likes of Man Utd had pulled way clear. They were full of money and we were skint. They'd invested hugely in Carrington and Old Trafford, and we had a crumbling Goodison.

Who sold to Moshiri and then got to stay and play with his train set?

Since Everton’s last cup win in 1995 - almost 31 years ago - they have managed one solitary cup final appearance (2009) - now almost 17 years ago.

During that period, there have been only six semifinal appearances (three FA Cup and three League Cup).

Clubs that have won a European or domestic trophy in those 31 years include Blackburn, Leicester, Portsmouth, Wigan, Middlesbrough, Birmingham, Swansea, Newcastle, and Crystal Palace. As of this evening, Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace are both 45 minutes away from European finals.

We are one of only six clubs (soon to be five) who have been ever-present since the Premier League began, benefiting from the vast flow of money that came with it.

How on earth have we managed to be so unsuccessful, so unlucky, for so long? The current ownership desperately needs to put together a blueprint for how we break our duck, and finally end the longest trophy drought in our 148 year history.

Blackburn, Leicester, Portsmouth, Wigan, Middlesbrough, Birmingham, and Swansea are playing in the lower leagues. Wigan are in League One and will be joined by Leicester next season. Personally, I don't envy these clubs. We get ourselves the stability needed, then bring in the right manager and players to move forward and win the odd cup here and there.
Most of those teams have spent their time in lower divisions ,I would bet the supporters of those clubs would take the memory of seeing a trophy than 30 years of premier league football being completely irrelevant

Didn’t Johnson build the park end ?
