The 2 years since Martinez left.

Jelavic was also playing. Fellaini wasn't leading the line from memory.

Even so, how many midfielders can be utilised as a 'forward' and score 12 goals in 36? For a club outside the CL, i'd say a player like that should be valued, not labelled a galoot as an example of a failed signing.

I disagree with @davek as I thought he was 'effective'. I wont slate a player if theyre 'effective'.

However McCarthy was the one Martinez wanted to fit his system and we needed to sell Fellaini to pay for him...Fellaini wasn't a Martinez system player.

That was Martinez's problem...he had to sign top players for his system to be effective and wasn't allowed to do so.

If anyone was thinking such, they'd be on drugs or something.

But we were definitely better under Bobby, even when his 2nd/3rd season imo.

We are awful, yet 4 places higher than where he left us.

We were spiralling downwards with a team lacking organisation, motivation and quality. To suggest anything otherwise is re-writing history tbh.

Every manager wants to sign top players and may or may not be allowed to it.

That’s football management - you got to make the best of the hand you’re dealt. Not everyone can manage Man City and take their pick of players.

It's this simple.

When he came in, he inherited a stable balanced side and built on it with attacking nous that Moyes didn't have and badly needed. We had a whopping season.

Second season, he had time to wobble the defence and the whole thing fell down like a house of cards.

Third season, everything had gone to pot, the players had stopped playing for him and there was no way back - e.g. "Baines is one of us" and a horrific run of results where we conceded 3+ a game.

There was absolutely no way he could have been given a fourth season. If he was, we were relegation fodder. We couldn't stop conceding goals and none of the players cared. We had no discipline whatsoever. He is a god-awful manager in terms of being pragmatic. If something started leaking, his answer wouldn't be to fix the leak; it'd be to pour more and more water in to see what happened.

The table doesn’t lie. Even with this stinker of a season we’ll finish higher than Bobbys 2nd and 3rd. He’d totally lost the plot after S1.

Yet we were significant in the cups and had exciting seasons in that regard.

This season we've been dumped at each first hurdle.

I wouldn't even be arsed if we were 12th etc right now if we had made it through to the semis of Europa or domestic cups. At least we'd have something to be excited for and some glimmer of hope for a trophy.

Well, the thread is about 'would we be better off under Martinez'....and the only way to judge that imo is whether he would have made better use of the money...

Agree but we had bad draws. Martinez would have been out had we drawn away at Chelsea and Liverpool too.

I actually believe we'd have gone for it a bit more and potentially done bits. But true, the draws weren't kind.

Europa league though? No excuses

This pure and simple.
If he had Moshiri's millions, would he have been punting on the likes of Niasse etc. Of course not.

Look at Klopp. Can't organise a defence so goes out and buys the best CB available. Shock horror all of a sudden Liverpool look far better.

Martinez would have done the same and should have been given the opportunity.

Unfortunately we binned him and all his work for "Hollywood" Koeman who made us run more. Worked a treat.

Yep.

We wouldn't have been punting on Alcaraz, or Niasse etc. We'd have been buying actual ballers.

Martinez Jedi mind tricks would've brought top players in.
